WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Mayfaire is expanding.

A spokesperson says the shopping complex is 97-percent occupied, so Mayfaire is now pre-leasing for phase three. That means more retail and restaurant space.

The expansion will be along Towne Centre Drive between Melting Pot and h.h. gregg near the TrySports Field.

No word on when construction will start.

I SAY, GIVE IT TIME BEFORE CRIME STARTS THERE. THATS WHERE THE MONEY AND AFFLUENT PEOPLE ARE. JUST LIKE DOWNTOWN. I DON’T GO TO MAYFAIR. TOO EXPENSIVE. I CAN USUALLY FIND WHAT I NEED BELOW OLEANDER AND SHIPYARD BLVD. BUT THEN, I DON’T NEED A LOT ANYMORE. DON’T NEED TRADER JOE’S OR WHOLE FOODS. TIME WILL TELL ABOUT ALL OF THEM.

hate to disagree with you; but I don’t see crime, of the magnitude one sees downtown developing here.

The local developers have a good game plan; they proceed with a business like approach to all of their development stages; and they maintain private security on the property. The property is wide open with no narrow streets or shrub over run walkways; and it’s well lit.

Add to that, thugs, hommies, and mischievous juveniles would stand out and attract attention to themselves before they could do anything.

But if they want to try, they might consider kevelar for their hoodies.

John Hinnant says “Bring it downtown”. I say…”Take to Mayfaire”.

Here we are in Wilmington with seasonal store fronts down town along with restaurants that open and close frequently, and tour buses that get ticketed for trying to bring shoppers into the area because they can’t find parking spaces.

Yet Mayfaire is expanding.

Apparently the marketing of down town is failing as its no longer a destination place for retailers. Mayfaire is apparently hip, trendy and busy enough to attract new jobs to the area.

We have bars…….

It’s too bad there’ll be more corporately owned chain stores coming to take business away from local, unique shops downtown, but completely understandable. Shoppers want to feel safe and have access to parking, which increasingly is not available in the downtown business district. The city has really lost it’s chance to revitalize downtown Wilmington and now it’s just too late.
