NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) – Police aren’t say what may have motivated a man to open fire inside two classrooms at a Connecticut elementary school today, but a law enforcement official who has been briefed on the investigation says the gunman was believed to suffer from a personality disorder

Twenty-six people, including 20 children, were killed in the shooting rampage before the gunman shot and killed himself. Police say another adult was found dead at a second location.

A law enforcement official has identified the gunman as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, the son of a teacher at the Sandy Hook Elementary school. The official says Lanza killed his mother at their home before driving his mother’s car to the school.

Police say the killer carried two handguns into the school, while a rifle was found in the back of a car. They say the shootings took place in two classrooms, but they are not providing details on exactly how it unfolded.

Students and their parents describe teachers locking doors and ordering the children to huddle in classroom corners or hide in closets as shots echoed through the building. Authorities said the shootings took place in two nearby classrooms, but they gave no details on exactly how they unfolded.

Although this is a tragedy, it will give gun haters more reason to trample on the 2ND AMENDMENT. LIKE barrack obama, george soros AND THE mayor of NYC michael bloomberg and the lying NEWS REPORTER chris matthews. And by the way the UN, also known as the united nothing want to strip us of every right we as AMERICANS have along with their supporters on the HILL. Just my .02 S/F ROGER FLEMING

I have no problems with gun ownership.
I do have problems with assault rifles being owned by the citizenry

    Ban assault rifle sales.

” Also consider that if just one person with a concealed carry permit would have been present the whole awful thing may never have happened.”
    This is pure unadulteraed BS.

    I have a CWP
I walk down the street and I am accosted unexpectedly by a gunman I am at a disadvantage – he has “the drop” on me and I cannot reach for my weapon.
This young man walked in and started firing – apparently without saying a word.
    The wild west is gone
The assault weapons ban has my complete and total support

  • Vog46 says:

But the ME has confirmed that everyone was killed by the assault rifle (the gunman may have pointed a hand gun at his head – so be it).

Your politics is interfering with your ability to reason
Gun ownership and ammo sales are up 33% under Obama – there is currently and have been no restrictions at all placed on gun ownership under his administration.
    As for assault weapons?
20 dead kids say you’re wrong – and I agree with them.
There have been far too many tragedies

And I am a father and grandfather. I am horrified by what happened in Connecticut last week.
A disturbed young man got a hold of legally obtained guns and killed many innocent people including defenseless children. There are many questions yet to be answered but as a gun owner I have a few.
Why did a woman need a Bushmaster when she had 10mm and 9mm hand guns already? That’s way too much firepower for home defense.
A poor word to choose – but it’s over kill.
Which brings us to the crux of the problem.
This is not a militia argument.
This is not a mental illness argument.
This is about having too many weapons and too much ammo for the stated purpose of just home defense.
This was a tragedy waiting to happen – with the odds increasing because of a mentally unstable person in that house.
The owner of a handgun has a responsibility to keep it under control at all times.
The owner of an assault rifle has a responsibility to have it securely locked up 99.99% of the time it’s not being used.
That gun owner, caring for a mentally unstable son or daughter owes it to their children, and society in general to make sure there is no chances that the unstable person can get at those guns – and if they can’t insure THAT – to have the guns stored somewhere else or sell them.
There are many lines that have become blurred here.
The line between responsible and irresponsible gun owners is blurred.
The line between offensive and defensive weapons has become blurred.
The line between defense of home and assault is blurred.
The Constitution’s 2nd amendment is also blurred by the ideology of many gun owners.
There is no need of assault weapons for home defense. Home defense is close quarter fighting where a hand gun provides more than enough firepower.
THere is no tyranny here in the U.S. to warrant or fear the government for. We have not lost any freedoms.
The arguments are silly – bordering on dangerous.
I own a gun. I had a .45 cal Colt service type (semi-auto) hand gun. Due to my advancing age I noted that I couldn’t control it to the degree I used to be able to so I switched to a 9mm. I have total control over the weapon in use and feel much better about it. I believed and still believe in the one shot, one kill belief drilled into me during my service time, a long LONG time ago.
But I know that when I have carried, there has never been a situation when I needed to reach for it as I avoided those situations. Now I wonder if I should just put it in my nightstand. I know my wife is next to me so if a break in occurs I know automatically it is a foe, someone I have to defend against. When the kids or grandkids are coming over the weapon is locked.
I want to think I’m doing the right thing – that I’m a responsible gun owner but after last friday I’m not so sure. I have discussed this with my adult children and the Police and if I should start showing signs of dementia and or Alzheimer’s that the executor of my will has the legal right to confiscate the gun and turn it into the Police for disposal.
But I am still thinking about those children.
We should ban all assault weapon sales. Those weapons belong in the hands of the police and military. There is no need for that type of weapon for home defense and the mis-use of those weapons leads to tragedies that are SO LARGE in scope, that the gun enthusiasts should understand that its just one type of weapon they should have to give up without remorse.
It is time. Gun owners are their own worst enemies, and MORE guns is not the answer.

I am not sure that I understand your post. It sort of appears that you believe that people should not own a gun except for home defense. I do understand and agree that owners should control their guns at all times. You accurately say that we have not lost any freedoms. I guess that it is OK with you if we just lose a couple, is that right? Many people use assault weapons for Saturday afternoon fun on the range; others may use them to hunt but I have never personally seen anyone with an assault weapon hunting.
You also say that there is no reason to fear the government – have you not heard of the Fast and Furious Operation that was undertaken by our current administration? There are still almost 2000 assault weapons unaccounted for from that operation, which by the way was another ploy to take our guns (IMHO). That should give you pause as to what depths the government may go.
It is being reported by some agencies that this nutcase that committed the atrocity in Connecticut did so with only two handguns – a 9mm and a .45 cal. Same type that you have! I have them too and enjoy them at the range quite often.
Our 2nd Amendment was written to protect us against a tyrannical government and written by much smarter people than I. Mr. Holder, Mr. Obama, and the Clintons have a long history of wanting to do away with guns and ammunition and will use every opportunity to do so, as seen in last night’s memorial service speech in Newtown.
I hope that you more carefully examine your feelings about this tragedy and understand that this occurred because of a person that was irresponsible with control of their firearms, and a mentally unstable person that took advantage of the situation. Also consider that if just one person with a concealed carry permit would have been present the whole awful thing may never have happened.
