WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Four people appeared in a New Hanover County courtroom this morning accused of murdering Joshua Proutey, 19, who was found dead of a gunshot wound in a parking lot near 2nd and Orange streets Thursday night.

At their first court appearance District Attorney Ben David alleged that the four suspects went to downtown Wilmington with the intent of robbing people. David said the four suspects followed a woman from one of the downtown bars until she stopped in a yard and pulled out a phone to call 911, at which point they ran away.

Prosecutors say the four suspects then found Proutey in a parking lot, where they robbed him of $10, his cell phone and a sandwich.

David claims after the suspects robbed Proutey, they ordered him back into his vehicle. When Proutey resisted, David says Quintel Grady, 22, shot Proutey once in the head killing him.

According to New Hanover County Jail and Wilmington Police Department records, Christopher Daniel Cromartie Jr., 23, Daniel Edward Henry, 17, Jasmine Nikole Dottin, 19, and Grady were arrested on suspicion of felony first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, attempted burglary and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon. Dottin also had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for failing to appear on an unspecified charge.

Cromartie, Dottin and Grady are all being held without bond and could face the death penalty. Because Henry is a minor, he is being held under a $2 million bond and faces a maximum of life without parole.

All four suspects are due back in court January 10, 2013.

Committing robberies and murdering innocent citizens does not constitute “work.” If he was truly gainfully employed, he likely would not have qualified for continued residence in subsidized housing provided by the city of Wilmington. And exactly what “community outreach” did he do? (No, gang recruitment and terrorizing the community with guns do not count.)

Some people don’t get it even after they’ve been told. It’s disappointing that everyone can tell you are an American black by your typing and grammar. You and everyone that “thinks” like you; get out of the County.

  • liz says:

Too bad these four black thugs didn’t do us the favor of turning their newly-acquired Magnum 357 on themselves like the mentally sick killer in Connecticut. Could have saved the Proutey family the agony of a trial and saved us all the expense of a trial and supporting their sorry asses in prion for the rest of their lives. They all deserve the death penalty, but we’ll all settle for life in prison for all four, just to assure that they can’t do it again. Hope they have fun in prison trying to find an easy way to “make a buck.”

  • Angewidert says:

Let he who has not murdered another cast the first ballot for a capital punishment.

  • 357sig says:

Why not blame the victim, the WPD did when it said Mr. Proutey was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

  • Vog46 says:

OK these robbers had the jump on this guy – and one of them had a gun.
You’re carrying a CW. Put yourself in the victims shoes.
If they pointed the gun at your head and pulled the trigger YOUR gun doesn’t do any good.
If you had a chance to pull your weapon – which one do you shoot first? If you see the gun held by the robber that’s easy – or is it? Do the others have guns? Do you get off one round before you’re shot?

The robbers then take your money, your lunch, and your legal hand gun.
There have been and will be no restrictions placed on hand guns.
There WILL BE (hopefully) a ban on assault weapons and their ammo.
President Obama has loosened restrictions on guns – they are now allowed to be concealed carried in National Parks and on Amtrak trains – legislation passed under his Administration.
Gun sales are up 33% under his Administration and ammo sales are up as well.
The NRA has become the most dangerous lobbying organization int he country and should be banned from any contact with government officials.
An Assault weapons ban has my complete and total support.

Reading this brings tears to my eyes. Josh never wanted to show fear and I know he was trying to stand his ground , but what an idiotic reason to take his innocent life. He was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and the murderer has no idea how many friends and family they affected by taking Josh from us. He was such a joy and light to everyones life. His presence in a room could bring a smile to your face. He was a beautiful person inside and out and I hope the killers pay the price we all are paying now for his loss. Love you Josh and the rest of Johnston County does too. <3

  • Guest1 says:

The law treat will treat all of the Defendants the same regardless of whether it was just one of them that pulled the trigger. They all set out with the same intent of robbing an individual with a deadly weapon. Whether any of them actually intended to carry out a murder is hardly relevant and since murdering someone was a natural and foreseeable consequence of the robbery that they set out to commit, I don’t have any sympathy if they are locked up for a long, long time as a result.

  • Vog46 says:

So if the 3 other friends didn’t stop it they’re not guilty?

Quite a statement on todays society if you ask me.

  • MAC says:

I find your comments to be an insult. The description of the crime stated that the four suspects went out with the intent of robbing people. I guess in your mind we should look at the value of the items ie sandwich, cell phone, and the $10 and divide that by four since there were four charged. That would probably work out to about $30 per robber. Surely we couldn’t send the three that didn’t pull the trigger to jail for that, after all they were brought up poor and they are the real victims. Maybe you can call Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton to come down and organize a march to bring attention to the racial injustice that’s being carried out here. Why that boy had a sandwich, phone, and ten dollars and they deserved it because they were brought up in poverty. Ask them what they did with the sandwich and you’ll probably learn that they ate it because they werent bothered by their actions. I’ll bet when they were arrested they weren’t wearing the WalMart brand shoes, or jeans, more likely they were wearing the latest Nikes and designer jeans. We all know those things are a necessity to those in the poverty stricken areas to help lift their self esteem. There is a problem with the values system here. Bottom line is they are where they are because of the decisions they made and their parents before them. It’s not the fault of the system. The American tax payer provides free education, housing, healthcare, food and now we’re even footing the bill for cell phones. The initial intent of the program was designed to help lift people from poverty but history has shown that the more we give the worse it gets. We have a young boy that has been taken from his family and justice must be served.

  • Angry white male says:

We white people are now the minority not blacks. Blacks continue to live in the getto because we allow it we give them welfare checks food stamps a free place to live why would they want to change they have everything they need. They don’t want to work, they want handouts and any one taking up for these FOUR ANIMALS are blind. Cause that’s exactly what they are. Good job to WPD and NHCSD for getting the trash off the street

  • taxpayer says:

    have criminal backgrounds?

  • Guest 2083 says:

My Lord, the whole world has gone crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look around you, listen to the news. Senseless killing in schools, innocent children/people killed by whom? Does it matter? Some of our young people are sick and tormented. They do not value human life–irregardless of race/color we live in a sick, desensitized society.

  • Guest63835 says:

Thank God they were caught. And thank the magistrate for putting them without bond. The least they deserve is to not be able to spend Christmas with their loved ones since they ruined another family’s Christmas. These sorry criminals need to get jobs. I hope they choke on the sandwiches they’re fed in jail.

  • Me says:

Having known many Africaan American friends who grew up in much tougher ghettos in Wilmington, NC, I find it insulting and racist to use that as any excuse to choose to go out and stalk people to rob which ends up in a violent, senseless death. You are in control of your own future and to imply otherwise is insulting. Your poor victim of a hoodlum could have backed out after the couple woke up and they left the Forest Hills neighborhood. He could have backed out after the woman went in the yard realizing she was being stalked like some sort of human prey. He chose to continue and he needs to get off of the streets and behind bars for the rest of his life.

  • CarryConceal says:

This REALLY makes me angry that an innocent 19 year old was gunned down by habitual criminals and people want to say THEY are the victims because they lived in the ghetto. They had NO ambition other than to HUNT down innocent people while living off the taxpayer. Think about it…Josh & his family worked to pay taxes to support the thugs that took his life! We should not spend one more penny by supporting these thugs in prison. Give them the death penalty!

  • Guest-of-the-day says:

American justice says “innocent until proven guilty” so put your nooses away…

  • Stoney says:

There always someone who will protect the guilty. What’s next? You gonna blame the victim?

  • Guest23423 says:

Hats off to the WPD. If these individuals are found guilty then they are proven animals and deserve to be treated like animals. I do not like to stir the race debate but I feel strongly that if four white individuals were accused of killing one black individual there would be national outrage. This was a horrific incident and I feel for downtown residents, businesses, but most importantly the family and friends of the victim, as they will never fill the void that was lost that horrible night.

  • Guesttenheimer says:

Sorry buckwheet, this is a public forum and we can comment any way we please, anytime we want, about any article we want! Don’t forget that.
What’s uncalled for is four greedy, ignorant thugs shooting a young man in the head to steal his cell phone and 10 bucks! American justice is about keeping these rabid, dog-like creatures in an 8 x 10 and away from functioning society for the remainder of their lives! You seem to have a lot of confusion between “American justice” and the US Constitution!

  • Guestorama says:

While it sounds like all 4 of these people were involved in robbery, only one of them pulled the trigger. I wonder how the other 3 felt about murder, we don’t know. Until a trial, we don’t even know that any of them are guilty. Comments that they are all animals are unreasonable and premature.

  • Guest526 says:

Mr. Angry white male, I don’t believe this horrific crime committed was about race, I believe it was a robbery, be it a white male or black male. For as “We white people are now the minority” don’t just half listen to news, do your research please. African Americans do not live in the ghetto because you “we white people” allow it and give THEM “welfare checks and food stamps” repeating myself, research the US Census and look up the percentage of whom receives foodstamps and checks “entitlements”, ok. Do you think just because they’re African American, that all African Americans’ would take up for them after committing such a heinous crime. I’ll pray for folks like you with such a mindset. May God bless you.

I’m an actually friend with josh and for someone to do this to him breaks my heart. He was such a loving human being, the funniest person you’d ever meet. To see his family, and all of my friends broken over this makes me want to kill them myself But I know josh wouldn’t want us to live with hate in our heart .thank you all for your support. Josh is now in heaven, looking over us.

  • Guest20562 says:

It don’t matter how they felt they were all in it together. If they are all found guilty let’s go back to public execution than next time some thugs want to try this maybe it will cause them to think before acting.

U can say what you want but you know im right look at the comments and news reports of these criminals. Why are white murderers never called thugs but blacks are? Why are black murderers never called Mentally ill? Hats off to WPD keep doin a wonderful job. To the DA And judge fry them and any other criminals.

I knew his Dad (Doc Prouty) who was with us in Vietnam (HMM-262) in 1967, 68, and 69…..

I met him at a reunion…..and remember him as a gentle and special young man with a tremendous future. I am having some of the same sad feelings that we all have for the Connecticut massacre…….hard to imagine a reason for this except just plain self-serving and selfish evil decisions by other human beings.

    Semper Fidelis,

  • Guest6858 says:

Do you really want to know why? Because animals act like animals. If you are a member of a CIVILIZED society, you act in an appropriate manner. Quite frankly, this looks to me as though the perps were targeting a white man,….which would make them blatently racist. Any more questions?

  • Guestorama says:

Not saying they are not guilty if they didn’t pull the trigger, but I am saying that we don’t know the circumstances. One of the people under arrest is known by a few people I know as a decent, helpful person, and my friends are in shock about his involvement. Not the one who pulled the trigger. There is question if this possibly decent person even knew there was a gun onboard, or loaded, or if the gun was ever supposed to be fired. I’m not making any statement about what happened, but I am saying that we have so few details here and we should hesitate before calling them all animals. Thieves deserve punishment, but I can’t say it is appropriate to call a thief an animal. If they all had intent to kill, then I’ll agree, they are all animals. But we don’t know the details.

My prayers as well as my loved ones go out to Josh’s family. One thing I do know is the God will grant you peace in the middle of your storm that surpasses all human understanding. I pray that God continues to hold Josh’s mother father and siblings in his hands and comforts them. I know that everyone is hurt upset and shocked at what has happened including the family and the loved ones of the ones that have been arrested we also must keep in mind that they are also someone’s son father brother sister and daughter! There is not only one family grieving today there is five so many people have been hurt in the senseless tragedy that could have been avoided if these for young adults made better decisions. I am a Christian strong in my faith and I honestly believe that it’s wrong to wish death upon anyone’s child! I know that a lot of you are furious and you have every right to be but remember before wishing death upon someone let he who has not sinned cast the first stone. Just keep praying for Josh’s family and the family of all involved and even the four arrested that got have mercy on the because At the end of the day we all must stand before him on judgement day! God Bless the Prouteys!

  • disgustedguest says:

how about…….GUILTY BY ASSOCIATION? would of worked out in everyones favor had they all decided to get off their lazy butts and work for what they need and want, instead they left their homes with the intent to rob someone. doesnt matter what color because every race and color has low life scumb that think its ok to take other peoples belongings or life.

  • Me, Myelf, & I says:

This was a Hate Crime. Each year thousands of whites are murdered by blacks. That one in 1,500 times, when its the other way around, it would be a national story, and Jesse Jackson would have busloads of protesters coming down.

I doubt Jesse Jackson, or Spike Lee, will be coming down to protest this evil act of murder.

  • windsnake6969 says:

A quick public records search shows that these thugs ALL have criminal records! Mostly felonies! (i.e., Assault with a deadly weapon, Armed robbery, Burglary, Various drug convictions)

  • ufgators81 says:

since you are trying to turn this into a racial issue and compare it to the murders of innocent children at sandy brook school, i wish the murderers of this young man would do what the one did in Connecticut and kill themselves. that would take away the cost of feeding them and caring for them in prison. as far as the mental aspect is concerned, remember the long island train killer, who happened to be black and represented himself in the trial? he was called mentally ill by the media. there have been few black mass killers in the united states. that is a statistical fact. isn’t it better to stick to the facts because i am sick of everything being about race. if a twice elected black American president is not proof that this nation has come a very long way in racial issues, i have missed history. And MLK, a republican by the way, dreamed of a day when the color of one’s skin is of no concern.

  • Nathan B. says:

If you take a walk anywhere in the downtown historic district at night, you are putting yourself at risk.

Although profiling does not sit well with my political views, I profile when out at night in the historic area. If I see a young black male or group of males, I am on my guard. I head in the opposited direction as fast as I can.

Why? Because young black males commit most of the violent street crimes in downtown Wilmington.

    Check the statistics.

  • Bob Harrison says:

Like Moon, I didn’t know Josh, but I did know his father, Doc Prouty, a Corpsman who risked his life to save the lives of anyone that needed his help. Doc is a good, gentle man and the one time that I met Josh at our HMM-262 reunion, he reminded me of his father when he was 40 years younger. Josh was a bright, happy young man with the whole world ahead of him. It is unimaginable how little value some place on a life, any life. I hope if those that the Police have in custody are ones who took Josh’s life, they are found guilty and sentenced to the fullest extent of the law. My desire is not driven in any way by racial prejudices, but by the lack of humanity of those that took this life.

    Semper Fi

  • hsirnebx says:

Even if they weren’t aware of a gun involved, the were attempting to rob people. That is criminal act enough. They knew what their intents were and it’s sad that they took a wonderful life. They deserve to be in jail.

  • Lovelyk says:

Yes this was a cruel act and when u set out to rob someone you deserve what you get. But i know one of these ppl personally and this individual works, and does community outreach for the youth in our community. Some of these comments are racially charged. Skin color doesnt make you an animal. Please look on starnews mugshots and look at the different races who have been arrested for robberies that could have easily turned out the same way. Please dont let the media fool you, they have been wrong in alot of these cases. Follow up on ur own and make statements once you learn the full truth

  • Guest456 says:

It does not matter what color you are or male or female etc. this was a senseless crime and all four should fry!!!! Yes one pulled the trigger but all participated. The young man who was murdered will never see his 20th birthday while these THUGS get to sit in prison and receive shelter, food and health care WHY WHY WHY!!!! I am sure it was because somebody was abused as a child or lets blame poverty, when in fact it is because these thugs thought this was fun and they could get away with it. I am frankly sick of thugs taking over our lives and causing so many to live in fear……FRY THEM!!!

  • Country Girl says:

These 4 “friends” made a plan to head downtown to rob people. Did they only target white people? Maybe in addition to all the felony charges, they should also be charged with a hate crime. To kill for 10 bucks, a sandwich (reminiscent of the thugs who murdered the Chinese delivery driver!) and a cell phone shows just how much hate they have towards others…and I wonder if a lot of that hatred is aimed at a different race. Why is it mostly white people who are charged with hate crimes and yet when the victim is white, that charge is rarely brought forward?

  • B M says:

You’ve hit the nail on the head, this was definately by definition a “HATE CRIME”, so much for being a juvenile, what’s good for the goose is also good for the gander, so if 4 whites had have murdered a black kid the charges would have reflected it, so I don’t think New Hanover county is doing so good at treating everyone equal1

  • GuesttseuG says:

Anywhere in Wilmington is the wrong place at the wrong time.

  • Guest Mmm says:

That’s actually a very good point. I DO believe they were mentally ill, now that you made me think of it. I have been saying all along that these mass shooters ALWAYS have traumatic upbringings, and we’re either abused or neglected as children and this is what leads to their actions. I believe the same will be found true with these 4 people.

The problem is, no one will EVER look into their past. They will label them thugs and move on and ignore and difference between them and anyone else that looks like them. They will group them all into the same catagory and refuse to accept the fact that it is A PARENTING AND UPBRINING ISSUE much more so than any race or society enviroment. It doesn’t matter WHERE you were born, it matters how you were raised. Until this is accepted and understood by the public, we will never get a real change in society.

  • Missee says:

Only one of them pulled the trigger, but I am sure that the other three nurderers knew he had a gun. With that being said, the punishment won’t even compare to what they deserve.

  • John says:

I never go downtown by myself any more. That is sad. We have what could be such a nice downtown. We have great theatre and some nice restaurants and shops down there . My heart goes out to this young man’s family and friends. And a big thank you to the police who helped to arrest these thugs. I don’t know what the answer is for our nations problems concerning young people who are evil and act with no feelings. Killing children and killing promising young men and women, killing anyone…

Something is very wrong with our society and most of the civilized world is watching in disbeliefe at our turmoil. This past year has been our most horrid of years both nationally and locally.

I think we all need to reflect on our country and say a prayer for those we have lost to violence.

  • Philip says:

With people like these 4 and the nut in Conn. loose on the public how can anyone think that giving up your rights with more restrictive gun laws is the answer. Hope they are tried and convicted with the maximum punishment.

  • bcoach says:

I am so sorry for the young man’s loss of life..what his family and friends must be going through right now. We are definitely praying for peace for his family. He did nothing to deserve being gunned down in a parking lot and left alone. I am also shocked and saddened about the young folks charged with this horrible crime. Being acquainted with one of those young men, I am dismayed that he is involved in this ordeal. I believe he was really on the path to changing the course of his life, instead he got caught up in this kind of trouble.

No matter how we all feel about this insensitive crime and loss of life, the entire situation has and will leave a gapeing hole in the lives of five families.

  • concern says:

Acting in Concert will is the statute for which the 3 co-defendants will be charged therefore they are be charged for the same charged as the shooter.

  • Guest1011 says:

This is a racial crime! Bottom line. And no one can argue that if the tables were turned…4 white individuals shooting and killing a single black person…it wouldn’t be called a racial crime. The NAACP would be all over this! So where is our group to rally for white people? Better question, how many MONTHS before these criminals are back out on the streets? I hope they burn in hell for what they have done.

  • Wilmington must be a breeding ground for low lifes like this, everytime you turn around a group of blacks are killing whites or other than blacks for no good reason.
The Wilmington 10 are asking to get away with doing it years ago with the help of the fat a$$ naacp so now all the brothers and sisters in the hood think it’s ok.
I wondered why they always called themselves brothers and sisters and now I know, so much free time in the hood because working people pay their way all they do is act like rabbits making more babies and the mothers don’t remember who the daqddy is so they are all family.
The true meaning of naacp is Never Ask About Colored People.
In their fat a$$ leader’s eye they are always right even when they kill a white man. The state did a good job at one time stoping them from breeding, looks like it needs to happen again.

  • GuestWendy says:

Those murderers have absolutely no future and no value in our society. They were raised as animals with animal values and should be kept in prison their whole life, if not anything worse. Nothing good will ever come out of them.

  • artofpeace says:

Here is an interesting article about Cromartie http://www.starnewsonline.com/article/20090715/ARTICLES/907159980
He has been convicted of robbery before, and he has lived in the rough part of Wilmington, seen people die, experienced violence.
He has tried to turn his life around and been active helping organizations and trying to help younger kids. He is a part of the boxing center program.
He is not the one who pulled the trigger and I don’t believe for a second that he expected the 4th guy to do so.
But what we see is the difficulty in getting out of “the ghetto” life, or whatever you want to call it. What I see is one young man who I don’t believe is a murderer caught up in a situation that could have been predicted for him by anyone looking in. The trap and cycle of poverty that fosters criminal behavior is not something I bet any of you commenting here, calling them all Animals, know anything about. If you had any idea, you would seek justice for Josh, but not lump these criminals all together as if they are all the same. Just take a second and consider the connection between specific types of crime and economics. Poverty means crime, I don’t care what race you are. [Wealth also means crime, but a different kind-different drugs, too.] Murder is a different category than robbery, and you need to hold back from calling all of these criminals murderers. The unreasonable comments here are objectifying the criminals in the same way I believe the one who pulled the trigger objectified the victim. You don’t see any value or humanity, just a group of black palates to paint hate on to help assuage your anger and fear. Make it stop. A huge piece of stopping this senseless violence is creating a community where we can salvage people and get them out of the barrel of bad apples. All the ignorant remarks just serve to spin the same cycle of excluding the poor and minorities from a meaningful life in this community.

  • BD says:

It a sad day when someone is murdered and one cannot give his or her opinion without being called racially degrading names. While I agree with some of what you said I cannot condone your tone to the reply about comments being unnecessary. You see you really didn’t know if the writer was black or white and it’s obvious that your hate took over when you began to write. This act of violence was wrong and outrageous no matter who did it or no matter what the color of the victum’s skin.I’m a black man and I simply hate what happened to that young man and my heart goes out to his family especially his parents. If they are guilty then I hope they get all that they deserve, even death if a jury find that way, but to me from what I can see of the facts so far this is not a race issue but rather an outright thug/criminal issue. You are right we can say whatever we like here on this site about this act I only hope that we can use better judgement when we do so.And yes you may have so confusion understanding our American Justice System and Constitution.

In regards to the artofpeace response – What planet are you from? This typical bleeding heart black response that attempts to explain that blacks from the “ghetto” committing horrific crimes should somehow be extended a gentle hand because of their poor upbringing is ludicrous. Why is it that society should always be responsible for their plight. These 4 “animals” knew what they were doing and had plenty of time to think things through. I’m reasonably sure that they all knew the shooter had a gun. They all should and will suffer the consequences. I mean $10, a sandwich and a cell phone. These were truly stupid criminals.

First off u cant say it was how u was raised. u dont know if the parent was the best parent in the world. Once your child turns a certain age and old enough to make their own choices then as a parent u can talk to them show them teach them but when they at that age u cant co.trol them. Sometimes it is the upbringing and sometimes its not.

I myself did not know Josh but I do know his brother Ben, and he is one hell of a guy. I can only imagine Josh was a great person and nothing anyone can say or do will take back the hurt you must be feeling. The only thing I can say is I hope that God will be with you during this tragic time. I wish I could could have meet Josh, I wish I could have shaken Josh’s hand.

  • Thaddeus Mensch says:

Joshua Proutey was targeted because of his RACE.
Christopher Cromartie Jr. said “I figured if I robbed a White person… they’re bound to have money lying around.”
    Anti-Whites support a blackout on black-on-White murders.
Anti-Whites support flooding White countries with non-Whites.
Anti-whites support White genocide and call it “anti-racism.”
They say they’re “anti-racist” what they are is anti-White
anti-racism is just a code word for anti-White.

  • Shocked says:

I have Known Chris Cromartie all My Life, One Of My CLOSEST friends and Despite the Animal the Media Is Painting him to be…I cant accept that. he Is GUILTY of Robbing Josh, Burglary, and Accessory to the Murder..but to try to give him the DEATH PENALTY WHEN HE DIDNT PULL THE TRIGGER? MY HEART IT BROKEN AT THE THOUGHT. i am also an Associate of Josh and I thank god that They Found all the People Who played a Part in this vicious Crime. My Condolences are with his Loved Ones. all im asking is that the Appropiate Puinishments be given. the girl who was the getaway Driver…I would say 35 Years..but LIFE? I dont know what to think…It was a Bad Plan gone Worst…

  • David says:

are you stupid? I am black and this is a senseless crime. All those involved deserves what they got, they were all a part of it. I am so embarrassed to be black. Those involved should be eradicated from the face of the earth, they are trulu scum.

  • Miranda says:

He was shot over $10, a cell phone and a sandwich. These guys DESERVE to spend time behind bars for LIFE. We need more police patrolling downtown Mayor Saffo…instead of hanging out in front of city limits shooting the breeze, they need to patrol. Wilmington is NOT safe…reminds me of Durham 10 years ago…the ghettos need to be cleaned out. I am just glad they were caught. Now they can wear their prison uniforms sagged down to show they are available.

  • Liz says:

These hardened criminals live downtown, close to the historic and entertainment district, so they can rob, beat up or shoot, and go a few blocks to their homes. The police know where the gang-affiliated ones live but can’t do anything until they catch them committing crimes. The Wilmington police respond quickly. I know because i used to live downtown until I felt that I had to move to a safer area. Our city police are doing an awesome job but we need more of them concentrated in the downtown area. The presence alone can discourage a lot of these stupid thugs from committing their crimes. Notice that they always have to have more than one in their attacking party. They are too cowardly to go out alone and confront their victims. They have to have a group and a BIG HANDGUN.

  • I didn't major in Humanities says:

perhaps even drive them to your house and away from the highest crime spots. Would that make you happy?

  • RSimmons says:

We should be asking them why they aren’t doing more to keep these hardened criminals out of downtown. Maybe it’s time for a proactive Rudy Giuliani approach.

  • liz says:

Any 5-year-old child knows right from wrong, regardless of what kind of home he or she was “raised” in. Even the worst mother or grandmother tells her children or grandchildren to stay away from the “bad” kids. All four of these sorry losers knew what they were risking, for themselves and for the people they stalked. All four deserve, and will get, a minimum of life in prison for this cold-blooded killing. They took the life and dignity of a fine young man. Mr. Josh Proutey chose to work to make his “quick buck” and died at the hands of no-good scum who went out looking to rob someone, hoping to make “a quick buck” as the youngest of their group admitted.

  • Guest mmm says:

If you aren’t raised in a nurtured enviroment, how do you expect them to had morals? Are the schools teaching morals? Is the workforce teaching morals? Where would they learn these morals??

If you don’t have a quality home enviroment, these a good chance you will Develope mental health issues. Not all mental health issues lead to murder. But they do have an impact on society. If a child is abused or neglected, there is an almost definite chance they will Develope mental health issues. If they were abused or neglected, what kind of morals could they possibly learn??

It’s a two way street. Humans aren’t born with morals, they are taught them by the people closest to them.

  • ENL says:

Funny first it was four young black men that killed a delivery driver for Chinese food, Now four black young men and women kill a person for $10 bucks. Statement from the NAACP anyone.

  • Ronnie Marshall says:

Another Tragedy. Mental health issues really needs to be dealt with at every government level. Another young adult doing senseless evil.

  • Guest43546 says:

What mental health issues? These 4 are low-life criminals that need to pay with the highest sentence if convicted.

  • Stoney says:

This isn’t a mental health issue. This is a crime issue. It involves criminals doing criminal things. They need to be removed from society.

  • Guest 10101 says:

Those who deliberately choose to perpetuate evil have MORAL health issues, not MENTAL.

YOU must have a mental health issue to think otherwise.

  • Citizen of the Republic says:

    Great job by law enforcement.
If there were any persons that assisted these in any way they should be arrested also.

The City should review the concealed carry situation.
Currently, you can’t carry on the Riverwalk. That is a bad policy.
Until people can feel safe downtown at all times the City is not being utilized and visited as much as it could be.

Very good job, but please change the Riverwalk ordinance.

  • taxpayer says:

From the Star-News story: “According to prosecutors, Proutey was killed for his cell phone, two $5 bills and a Subway sandwich.”

Senseless, cold-blooded murder. I hope these four are found guilty and rot in hell.

  • CAC supporter says:

Kudos to WPD on such a swift arrest of these four criminals on what could have easily been chalked up to a random act of violence and become a cold case. May justice be served.

  • TiredCitizen says:

Swift execution. Each individual is allowed one appeal. After their appeal, they’re taken out back and shot. No fan fare. No media attention. Nothing. Just a .22rd to the head, similar to the method used to put down hogs and cattle in years past. Sadly, NC is too chicken shit to actually follow through with the death penalty.

  • Tarheel says:

How sad! What a terrible, incomprehensible thing to do to a young man who had his life in front of him—a young man who had already dedicated his life to helping those who were less fortunate. My heart is burdened for his family and friends.

May justice be swift for these four careless pieces of scum. I just hope that each night when they shut their eyes that they will experience the anguish that Josh’s family is living.

  • ENL says:

Well the value of a human life in Wilmington is $10,a sandwich and a cell phone. That is all the more reason you should be aware of your surroundings be armed and ready to protect yourself.

  • Vog46 says:

    But good job Wilmington PD…..

    Vog

  • the doctor says:

Now for the DA and the judge to do their job: push for the death penalty.

  • Guestsad says:

May you burn in hell for what you did to that poor boy. You low life scumbags.

  • Guest822 says:

Funny that you say that… Because EVERYTIME a MASS MURDER happens, where lots of people are killed… Especially 20 children for no absolute reason… I always say “I bet they are WHITE”… and guess what, everytime, I am RIGHT!!! Keep your racist comments to yourself unless you have a VALID argument to say that black people are the only murderers… the statistics are there as well! So shut up, bc WHITE people arent any better… Killing is wrong, no matter who does it…

  • YoMama says:

You wonder why these stories become racially charged? Every single time one of these things happen downtown my thought is always I bet they are black. I sincerely hope that I am wrong, but every time I check, they are. Do you even have to ask why we think this? Look at the statistics. Blame it on what you want, but the stats are there.

  • a white woman for the black people says:

i am a white woman and i back you up on this 100% its not just blacks most of the times it is white people that is doing the killing

  • supercalafagalisticexpealidochous says:

I knew one of the individuals involved in this horrific crime. (not the trigger man) We grew up together and completed our K-12 education together. I know he had a rough upbringing, not alot of guidance, and struggled with behavior issues; however that is no excuse. This crime was malicious and premeditated. All four individuals set out to rob innocent people in downtown Wilmington. Therefore, if someone died as a result of a planned robbery everyone should face the same consequence. For me, the plan to commit a robbery that then results in death means everyone is guilty. It is hard to imagine my childhood buddy facing the death penalty, but people have to endure the consequences of their poor decision making. I am genuinely disappointed, disgusted, and shocked by my classmates actions. My thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family. God Bless

  • B M says:

I’m willing to bet good money someone, maybe even deb Butler will be the attorney that represents these 4 animals, talk about ironic!

And some say good job WPD, what for, when downtown is more dangerous now than ever!, I have an idea, why not work 80% of your police force from 10:00pm till 6:am and let the honest citizens watch over the towns and neighborhoods during the day?, they’d be a drastic change in crime in the first 30 days.

  • ReplyToYou says:

You are ignorant, rude and not the slightest bit capable to have a meaningful conversation about this. Too bad it wasn’t you.

  • Reply_to_8M says:

Dear I’m Willing to Bet Good Money…..what a class act you are. Your comment is rude and you are uniformed. Just another ranting idiot. This tragedy is just that; a horrible act of violence by yet someone else with access to a gun. An example is “how quickly” human beings can lose control at great price. WPD did an excellent job bringing these four forward. Downtown, statistically, has seen a drop in crime. Do your research before you open your ignorant mouth. Finally, what a loser you are to insinuate that attorney Deb Butler is some sort of bad guy. You are wrong and I would love to see your uneducated self try to debate her on any subject here. Go point your finger at Goolsby who will most likely get Brian Berger off et again. Idiot.

  • Kayla Edmund says:

When i met Josh three years ago he was the funniest person id ever met. I am his Best friend’s girlfriend… so i was around him ALOT. My boyfriend grew up with him and was probably alot closer to him than anyone. I can’t even describe to you how this has affected him, as well as his other friends and family. The idea that somene would shot him for as little as his 10$ is just sick. These people deserve to sit in jail for the rest of their lives and nothing less. I loved josh so much and i can honestly tell you that its been very hard. Not having him around is going to be weird. I can honestly say that i feel so much hate for the 4 that were involved in this pointless crime. With time i know god will heal us all, but for now we grieve. I hope Josh’s memory will live on with us all, and that we can all remember the amazing and fun person that he was to have around.

    RIP Josh. We love you.

    -Kayla

  • guesty says:

Is it not rude and ignorant to wish another person dead?

  • Liz says:

Lock these four up and throw away the key. Hundreds of people come out of the ghettos every day and go to college, volunteer to help others, get good jobs, work hard and show respect to other human beings. I have met several women on the bus who have lived in the Wilmington ghetto all their lives, and have raised children who became good citizens. These four hardly deserve the word human. Anyone who goes along on any robbery anywhere knows that there is a chance that someone will get hurt, and when such a person makes a choice to go anyway, then he/she is just as guilty as the person who pulls the trigger. The law supports this idea. They will all serve life terms, hopefully. For the trigger man, I would ask for the death penalty if I were on a jury. That trigger man told the victim to get in the car so that he could kill him and no one would notice the body until these worthless thugs had time to get away. That is premeditated murder. I trust that our D.A. will ask for the death penalty and get it, at least for the trigger guy. That’s four more of these hopeless losers off the street. Let’s get the rest of them who are roaming around down town beating up women when they steal their purses, beating up people walking to and from events or just trying to walk to the store for a gallon of milk. Let’s get them off the streets and keep them off with maximum sentences.
