WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As students in Newtown, CT, other than those at Sandy Hook Elementary, the site of last week’s mass shooting, returned to class today, the White House said President Obama supports Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s plan to introduce a bill to ban assault weapons.

One Wilmington mother says that in her mind that isn’t even a question.

In June 2004 Holly Naujoks’s life changed forever when her daughter Christen, a UNCW student, was gunned down by her crazed ex-boyfriend.

“Christen was full of life,” Holly said. “She was eager to learn, and she had a personality that you were just drawn to she was bubbly.”

In 2004 Christen Naujoks’s ex-boyfriend John Peck began stalking her and going to extremes such as dressing as a woman to disguise his identity. His behavior led the Naujokses to take out a restraining order.

“That made him angry,” Holly said. “He didn’t like that. When he got angry, he wanted revenge, and that’s when he went out and that day that we got the protection order and bought a SKS Chinese assault rifle to kill her.”

In June 2004 Peck shot Christen at least 12 times at close range with military-grade 7.62 mm bullets; leaving her body so badly mutilated that she would have to be cremated.

“He fired so many shots into her that he blew her knee cap off. He blew the insides of her uterus, her spleen and all of her female organs and used the bullets that do the most tissue damage, and they all came out of her,” Holly said.

Holly Naujoks believes tragedies such as her daughter’s killing and massacres such as Columbine, Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook Elementary could have been avoided with a ban on all assault rifles.

“How many more people do you want to lose? Those were just young children, and those women that gave their lives to protect them. It’s got to stop,” Holly said. “There are too many of us parents who have lost their children or grandparents or sisters and brothers that have to live with this horror day in and day out, and it never leaves you. It never leaves you. It becomes who you are.”

Just watched the Naujok case on an episode of ‘Stalked’. As a mother I am heartbroken for Christen Naujok’s mother – and I am equally outraged by her ignorance. This case had homicide written all over it and from very early on. When the father of the perp admits he can no longer control his son’s behavior and urges Naujok to get a protective order, that might be your first clue. I won’t even touch on the escalating physical violence towards her or the maiming & killing of his personal pets. She knew he was still stalking her. Her mother told her to give the “system a chance” knowing FULL well what all the perp had done leading up to the murder. If anyone finds themselves or their child in a stalking situation – RUN, not walk, to your local armory. Purchase a firearm & learn how to use it. It is your only fighting chance. The fact this mother now wants gun control (as if that would have made a difference) is actually unforgivable. It lacks all logic and reasoning.

You are very rude to call a victims mother an idiot. SHE COULD NOT RECONIZE her daughter because of the weapon he chose. She should not have had to gone through that. He picked the most destructive weapon possible. Maybe if the laws required all weapon sellers to do a background check he would not have been approved and maybe then used a knife and maybe she would have survived, who knows. But calling her an idiot when all she wants is change and for peoples children not to die. You are very rude!!

If you have heard of the Ramsey shooting years ago that took place in the woods off the boardwalk yea that was my mothers cousin and neither me or her support the ban we have lived around guns all our lives. you people are so blinded by your own emotions that you miss the big picture would you like it if some one walked up and took away every thing you have ever known like your car told you to ride a bike or walk cause cars kill people so look at the big picture before opening your mouth.

I DON’T THINK THE LADY IS AN IDIOT AT ALL. FIRST OF ALL, IT WASN’T YOUR DAUGHTER KILLED, NO MATTER WHAT THE REASON OR THE WEAPON. WHAT?— DOES ANYONE NEED AN ASSULT RIFLE OR RAPID FIRE AND MULTIPLE CLIPS FOR? I AGREE THAT THEY SHOULD BE BANNED. GUN SALES SHOULD BE CLOSELY MONITORED. GRANTED, PEOPLE FIRE THE GUN, BUT IF THEY WEREN’T SO READILY AVAILABLE, PEOPLE WOULDN’T HAVE THEM TO SHOOT OTHERS WITH. AS FAR AS THE 2ND AMENDMENT GOES, HOW MANY YEARS AGO WAS IT MADE? MAYBE IT NEEDS TO BE REWRITTEN. IT WAS BEFORE WE HAD LAWS, AND MOST PEOPLE HAD TO HUNT GAME FOR A LIVING, AND PROTECT THEIR FAMILIES FROM RAIDERS AND INDIANS. WE DON;T HAVE THAT ANY MORE.

to rethink and re-write the 2nd amendment to match your views? **chuckle** uhhh NO! You are clearly in the wrong country comrade. No law will fix what’s wrong with the current mental state of some folks.

“The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,” said Wayne LaPierre, NRA’s executive vice president.

True whether you like it or not!

**Cap locks are annoying or is that your mo?**

I believe their point was that in those cities with high murder rates, they have strict no-gun policies, yet people are still committing murder.

  • HotDog

    Vog,

I have noticed that advocates for gun control only mention the murder rates when using those stats as a reason for gun control; why is that?

I have heard the argument, in favor of gun control, which alleges that the Australian gun ban has worked and they point to the decline in murder rates occuring after the ban. That may be true, but while the murder rates dropped, violent crime rates, overall, increased. Furthermore, our murder rates have also shown a steady decline; same with the violent crime rates.

If it was in fact the gun ban that worked, why did our murder rates decline also, with no gun ban? Additionally, if the ban has worked so well, why did the violent crime rates go up?

Instead of just looking at the murder rates, we need to take a more comprehensive view of violent crime as a whole. I am sure some violent crime can turn into murder if the victim is unarmed.

It’s not about hunting or target shooting. It’s about freedom and the insurance thereof. Try reading the Federalist Papers to gain some background on why we have a Second Amendment.

BTW, let them start with semi-automatic rifles, Then, handguns. Then pump shotguns and rifles. Several years ago, Senator Charles Schumer actually introduced a bill to outlaw “sniper rifles.” When you read the bill, it basically outlawed putting a scope on any centerfire rifle.

As Jesse Helms once said, “…why should those who believe in freedom treat it as if it were a roll of bologna to be bartered a slice at a time?”

If you don’t stand up to them now, you won’t BE a gun owner when they get through.

Charlotte has a murder rate of 7.6 per 100,000 residents
New York city’s rate is 4.0
Buffalo NY has a rate of 20.7
    Greensboro NC is 7.8

All figures are 2010 and based on a per 100,000 residents basis.

so it is apparent that New York city’s stringent guns laws do work – along with very aggressive legal pursuit of criminals.
New York STATE ranks 25th nationwide for murders on average.

Bloombergs right you can control it to a certain extent.

Hate to say this but we gun owners do need to keep our facts straight

    Assault rifles are different critters
The problem is NOT with the gun NOR is it with the “nut” that fired it.
Gun owners who do not secure their weapons are allowing for un-intended use of those weapons which is exactly what happened in Ct.
This woman and her “ex” were avid shooters – good for them.
But knowing they had an unstable kid in the house should have set off alarm bells – BIG ALARM BELLS – THIS DIDN’T HAPPEN. Heck they taught this unstable kid how to USE the weapon.
Misguided parents – thinking this couldn’t happen. According to some news yesterday the mother was pursuing guardianship so that she could commit the kid for treatment, with or without consent from the kid.
He’s THAT bad and you have weapons that can cause THIS much damage in your home?
This is totally irresponsible gun ownership if you ask me.
It has nothing to do with the second amendment
It has nothing to do with hunting or target rifles
It has everything to do with responsibility ad the lack thereof.

Sorry all of us gun owners – we brought this on ourselves. WE made it too easy to own weapons that can cause this much carnage under the false guise of protecting ourselves against a tyrannical form of government that we don’t have. The tyranny we fear is in our heads. We are erecting strawman arguments to justify an unnecessary level of firepower for the general population.

I never thought that you would join the larger media in abandoning journalism and adopting advocacy.

Despite our own personal losses (I too have lost someone to gunfire), we cannot abandon reason and adopt feel-good legislation that is technically nonsensical. Semi-automatic firearms have been with us for well over one-hundred years. They are not machine guns, as many so-called experts are pontificating about on network news. They simply load another round and eliminate the need to cycle a level or a bolt to prepare for a second shot.

Exactly what does Ms. Naujoks think would have happened had her daughter been shot with a .30-30 round from a lever action rifle? Are those bullets somehow less deadly? The idea that a 7.62x39mm round is deadlier than any other centerfire rifle round is ludicrous.

The entire discussion surrounding “assault weapons” is equally ludicrous. It is dominated by people who are technically ignorant of both firearms and ballistics. We already had the federal assault weapons ban that highlighted the idiocy of their efforts. The AR-15 was banned because it had a black stock, flash suppressor, and pistol grip, the Mini-14 was legal because it had a traditional wooden rifle stock. Both rifles accepted box magazines and fired .223 ammunition. Colt simply removed the flash suppressor and it suddenly wasn’t an assault rifle.

As far as “high-capacity magazines” let me assure you that the difference between firing thirty rounds from one magazine and thirty rounds from three magazines is less than four seconds to anyone who is trained or has even practiced.

In closing, let me point out how UNQUALIFIED people should not try to design or even report on firearms legislation. In your report you mention Virginia Tech. Seung-Hui Cho did not use a dreaded, deadly “assault weapon” in the Virginia Tech massacre. He used two handguns. But hey, if it plays well in a video report and accomplishes your goal, who cares if it’s true or accurate?

The fact that the media is now gladly mixing handguns with assault rifles with machine guns is clearly indicative that this in nothing less than a step-by-step effort to leave Americans with nothing but single-shot rimfires or shotguns, while claiming, “See? You still have your constitutional rights.”

Shame on WWAY for joining in the nationwide marketing campaign. I thought you were better, but I was obviously wrong.

Your daughter’s murderer occurred during the assault weapons ban. The ban expired on September 13 2004 while her murderer took place in June of that year per this article. A lot of good that did her. You might want do a little reasearch in her name.

  • Blake

    Sorry for you loss but..
Your daughter was killed with a weapon that was not covered by the Bradey Bill(assult weapon ban). Columbine happened during the assult weapons ban and they had broken 11 federal firam laws before the first shot was fired(only one of the four weapons was covered by the bill). The VTECH shooter used two pistols, once again not covered except for mag capicity. If you want to be a gun control activist I suggest you do a little research.

  • Guesttr

Sorry for your lose, but you are an idiot for wanting to ban all assault weapons. Any weapon could have killed her. He just chose that gun. He could have used a knife, car, choked her to death, or posioned her. He just happened to have chosen a sks. Will will you people understand that these are just tools. People do the killing not the tools alone.

  • Proof? Rightttt…

And all of these were committed with guns? where’s it say that? that’s what i thought…
