Talk of tougher laws driving gun sales

READ MORE:

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Gun suppliers in Wilmington are struggling to keep their shelves stocked. They say it has to do with people protecting themselves, but employees say they think customers are more worried about some weapons soon being banned.

John Yeaton thinks everyone has the right to protect themselves. He bought a gun Wednesday, so he would have a weapon if necessary.

"(I) started getting a little worried about what could happen," Yeaton said. "I wanted to hurry up and get down here and get one, so that it would be grandfathered in prior to whatever they decide."

Yeaton is not alone.

Shooter's Choice in Wilmington has been packed since talk of stricter gun control started circulating in Washington.

"People are just afraid," Shooter's Choice's Alice McKoy said. "We've been busy since before the election. Then we have our regular Christmas rush that we usually get, but I think after the incident (in Connecticut), people are afraid that they're not going to be able to get stuff, so everybody's coming in and buying everything they can get their hands on."

Despite recent shootings, employees at the store do not think banning certain types of weapons is going to make the community safer.

"I don't necessarily think that it's going to make a difference as far as the violence goes in our country," McKoy said. "I tend to believe that guns don't kill people. Automatic guns don't kill people. People kill people."

Yeaton served in the Marines and was wounded in action. He says his injury along with the potential new restrictions on firearms makes him worried about his safety.

"It's going to make me a much softer target, since I walk around with a cane after being wounded," Yeaton said. "It's going to affect everything."

People we spoke with today at the store say they believe people who go out of their way to register and purchase a gun legally are not the people the government needs to worry about. They said people who follow laws are not the same people responsible for mass shootings.

Feel safer?

It would be nice if the sales of gun SAFES were up instead of more guns to potentially fall into mentally ill and criminal hands. This country is just insane.

More Safes

How about our justice system starts enforcing the laws that are on the books now? or how about our country starts taking appropriate care of the mentally Ill? Or we could wrap everyone and everything in bubble wrap, plant lollipop trees and pave the roads in yellow bricks.

It's a shame that so much of America lives in their own little mirocasm and does not realize that there are some people that are just BAD and no matter what we do there is no rehabilitating or fixing them!

It sickens me to watch this happen over and over again. What kind of thought train is "I need some money so I will go rob someone?

Their parents and peers set the examples for them. These are the same parents who never try to better themselves. Who even take money form their children's drug dealings to live off of.

Then when an innocent law abiding citizen is victimized and ends up shooting these thugs all you see and hear is "My Baby My Baby he would never hurt anyone"! Then it turns out their baby had a gun in their pocket and has been robbing and hurting people for years.

I say fry those scum and allow honest law abiding citizens to protect ourselves. The police can't be everywhere.

MORE SAFES

With that rant, it sounds like you are one of the citizens we should keep guns from.

WHY? IF GUNS WERE LOCKED IN

WHY? IF GUNS WERE LOCKED IN A SAFE, THEY WOULD NOT BE READILY AVIALABLE. MAYBE YOU DON'T CARE THAT ALL THESE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KILLED BY NUTS AND THAT NOTHING NEEDS TO BE DONE TO TRY TO STOP THEM.
