RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Companies that produce the software behind video sweepstakes games want to delay closing down North Carolina’s sweepstakes halls as they seek help from the US Supreme Court.

The companies lost last week when the state Supreme Court upheld a state law declaring the sweepstakes halls as gambling operations. The industry has asked the state Supreme Court to delay enforcement of the law that could shut down hundreds of businesses across North Carolina.

The industry says it needs a few weeks to see if the U.S. Supreme Court will consider its claim of free-speech protections. The high court ruled last year that video games are protected just like books and films.

North Carolina’s sheriffs are gearing up to start enforcing the law outlawing video sweepstakes operations next month.

You’re an idiot to compare the local video poker business to the Wheel of Fortune sweepstakes. If you don’t know the difference, and why they are illegal, you would make a great customer. You better hurry up, only a few days left.

So if the law is that a sweepstakes game cannot be played using an “entertaining display” on a machine, are the websites / companies below breaking NC law?

If so NC should apply the law equally and charge them if they do so to the sweepstakes owners. (I believe the law to say the equipment is to be seized, so is the local TV station below’s equipment going to be seized)?

Below are links to various “sweepstakes” games that can be played online, including local news and car dealer websites. Also tv shows like Wheel of Fortune, which are aired on local TV stations here in NC, have sweepstakes all the time.

The sites you listed are all no purchase necessary to play. In other words, you don’t spend money in order to play. The sweepstakes places require to spend money. That is the big difference in what is legal and not.

That doesn’t spoil anyone’s argument. If you really believe it does, you might possibly not be processing information as effectively as possible.

Hello to everyone. Its great to be in america. What is legal??.. ask anyone and you will get a different answer. I do know this, we the state of N.C. need tax money and jobs. [Tax] video games and let the people play and pay and decide. We do it for cigarettes, lottery, alcohol, JOBS about 50000 will be lost.. money at least 360 million dollars could be in the bank by Jan 1, yes that’s right 360 million and that’s the start, next income tax, state tax, county tax, It could be as much as 750 million or more. Does this make it right? Why do the lottery thing and not another. Let the people play its their money. People the state just took your rights away and kids they took your lunch money also

Lets do it for the children. Schools need money. teachers stand up and be heard. You can buy a lot of paper and pencils, school lunches for the poor. Why should a state next to N.C. get our money.
