Outgoing Perdue defends how she governed NC

READ MORE:

RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) -- Her term as governor has had its share of controversies. Now with just a few days left in office, Bev Perdue spoke out today defending her work for our state.

"We've nearly completed the work around mental health," Perdue said. "Probation and parole is fixed. I believe the highway patrol is fixed. DOT is fixed; we've taken the politics out of DOT I did a really good job."

Perdue says she sees herself as a fix-it governor.

But North Carolina's first female governor shocked the state in January when she announced she would be the first in 30 years to not run for reelection, a decision she does not say much about.

"The nice thing about being me is that I don't have to give an answer that seems to be compelling to you. The person that I answer to is myself," Perdue said.

Some Democrats suggest the decision, at such a late hour, cost the party the governor's seat in November.

"I don't think it hurt the lieutenant governor at all," Perdue said. "The lieutenant governor had run a marvelous statewide race, had friends in every county, raised great money."

In spite of the fact Lieutenant Governor Walter Dalton raised just half as much money as Governor-Elect Pat McCrory, Perdue maintains she helped the ticket.

"I think I helped him a lot," she said. "I feel very good about what I did for the Democratic ticket."

Perdue also says she helped North Carolina. When asked about her proudest accomplishment, the governor, who always touted education as her first priority, turns to the kids.

"The most memorable moment for me as governor is the kids. The absolute kids that walk into this building and go, 'The governor's a woman!'"

Governor-Elect Pat McCrory will take office in a small private ceremony January 5. The inauguration ceremony will be held a week later, on January 12.

Joker-ette

So her proudest moment is being a woman? That pretty much sums up one of the worst governors that this state has seen in some time.

We all know she wasn't very good but can we get an explanation for the unexpected slice and dice to the corners of her mouth?

Legacy

Her legacy in my opinion is "bought and paid for." Her claims of caring about children are a joke. She diverted funds from the "education lottery" for other projects. Can anyone explain how the schools are in financial binds with all the money the lottery generates? After publicly stating she would let science decide the "Titan issue," when she was presented the science, she became harder to find than Jimmy Hoffa. This is from the person that claims to care about children. I wonder what "event" caused her to not even discuss the issue anymore? Big industry, even industry not based in this country, certainly has wide ranging $influence$.........

I think we will get to guess what other "events" will guide her final decisions on last second appointments and pardons.

Our country has a disturbing fixation on the physical characteristics of people. White, Black. Rich, Poor. Man, Woman. 99%, 1%. What about the character traits? Honesty, dedication, loyalty and integrity? People who distract you to focus on the physical are hiding the undesirable traits on the inside.

Wouldn’t you rather the kids recognize that you did something to improve their school rather than just being born female?

Where to start?

Let's see. Takes an out of country vacation during her first 30 days in office; notifies Little Walter by memo; and does not even leave a game plan for use by Government in her absence.

Follows up by showing there is no such thing as a trip on the taxpayer's nickel she won't take. Heads to California, in 2008, to lobby the film industry, and all she brings back is a director's chair with her name on it. Did not even hang at the beach with Arnold and Maria.

How many times did she go to Japan and the Orient during her 4 years?

Ensures the $850 million in stimulus money from the Feds is put to no good use to stimulate the economy.

Allows a Secretary of Commerce, and entourage, to make repeated trips, on the taxpayer's dime, to Paris and he returns each time with zip.

Saddles the state with billions in debt to the Federal Government which now the incoming administration and legislature must deal with.

I could go on. But she was laughable as a Governor.

Jeepers Tom

I guess you don't like Bev?????
The state constitution tells Walt EXACTLY whats supposed to happen should the Guv become incapacitated or not be in country.
Headed to California and we have the BEST film year in history in 2012?
I guess we should ask - was it worth it? (I'm not a fan of movie incentives but.............)

Why don't you blame her for hang nails while you're at it?
I'm no fan - but damn Tom that was bad even for you.........
The economy hasn't been kind to any governor

Vog

VOG, you disappoint me

You of all people know how government works.

Newly elected officials normally have a window of time, when first inaugurated, when they have the best chance to initiate some action plans and lay out, to the voters and legislature, what their agenda will be. And remember teh Legislature was controlled by the Democrats during her first 2 years.

At the Federal Level, I believe it is referred to as the First Hundred Days.

She left on an out of country vacation during her first 30 days in office. What was more important? Setting her administration's agenda or taking a trip? Sorry Vog, but that was a very poor plan.

And she compounded it by notifying Little Walter by memo and not leaving him some actions he could take, on her behalf, while she was gone.

That's poor leadership.

She made her California trip in 2008 or 2009; we saw the results in 2012. BUT, why did she not take the State or Wilmington based heads of the Movie Lobby with her? I raised those questions at the time of her trip. Who was better able to lobby the movie industry? Who knew the right persons of influence to call on? Bev, who had never been to Hollywood or the Department heads who interact with those folks on a regular basis.

Again, poor planning and por leadership.

Who always cries the education song and the need for more funding when the state is nearly broke? And who never hesitated to raid the Education Lottery fund to balance the budget or fund some non-education pet project?

Poor planning and leadership.

Who accepted Federal Stimulus money; used a portion to advertise all she was doing for the state; allowed the approval of things like the upgrades for the State Bug Museum; and which state had 12 of the 100 worst uses for Stimulus money as reported in a US Senate Release? The state of NC was a laughingstock for the media as a result.

That was stupid use of Federal money which could have been used for roads or infratsucture repairs. How many jobs were actually created by the $850 Million of Federal funds?

Who allowed the Secretary of Commerce and his little cadre to travel to some Air & Sapce show in Paris, at least twice during her administration; and did not require him to travel to Germany to lobby for the tire plant which went to SC. The SC Governor and a whole staff made the trip; identified exactly what the German owners werte looking for; and they got the plant and all of the jobs.

You are right, the economy in 2008 through 2010 was not kind. She should have thought about that when she planned trips and allowed the waste of available funds.

But, play the Devil's Advocate. List one positive thing she did that benefited the state and its citizens.

Ball's in your court Vog.

Maybe she will be offered a

Maybe she will be offered a cabinet post. A Democrat administration would be remiss if it let incompetence of that caliber go unrewarded.

Let's see...

Bev first proclaimed herself to be the "Education Governor"...and NC still ranks low. Next..."I'm the Jobs Governor"...and we have one of the highest unemployment rates in the country.

The only thing she did correctly was deciding not to run again.

she was a "PITIFUL" excuse

she was a "PITIFUL" excuse for a govenor or anything to do with a young persons mind, good riddance, glad that the people of NC have finally had enough of Hunt, Easley, Perdue special interest. the only way this leech will be able to start a private company is a "TAXPAYER" funded company, there is no way she has the intelligence to run a companny in NC that has to pay it's own way, and operate on it's own budget!

Another political..

idiot! That is all.....

It is alarming that people

It is alarming that people like this get elected to such important positions in our country now.Education?what on earth do these political types do with all this money for education? These kids are leaving school with now employable skills. What a dumb statement that was,the governor has no employable skills!!!

Purdue

Lets hope she doesn't add to her dismal record by giving a pardon the the Criminal 10.

Absolutely!

You are absolutely right! And where did they get all those sigs for a petition? I don't think they are all from ILM where they committed the crimes. Based on her record of decisions I have a sick feeling she may pardon them. They were not released because they were found to be not guilty, it was on a technicality. I hope Purdue has sense enough to know that.

Dont

Let the door hit ya!

Yeah...

In the meanwhile of your aftermath.. homes are being foreclosed on and we are all worse off. Great job!
