WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As the 2012 comes to a close, that means winter starts to really ramp up. A great way to combat those long, cold nights is with a nice up of hot cocoa.

In this edition of Kitchen Scoop, Alicia Ross shows us how to make our own hot cocoa mix that’s ready to go when the winter chill hits.

Hot Cocoa Mix

Start to finish: 10 minutes

Makes about 3 cups, 12 servings

1 cup powdered non-dairy creamer
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
1/3 cup nonfat dry milk powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1. Combine all of the ingredients in a 2-quart or larger plastic storage bowl that has a lid. Stir until thoroughly combined, then cover the bowl and shake vigorously to finish mixing.
2. To make cocoa, add 1/4 cup cocoa mix per 1 cup of hot water. Stir well and serve.

Makes about 3 cups dry mix. Store in an air-tight container for up to 6 weeks.

Approximate Values Per Serving: 53 calories (29% from fat), 2 g fat (1.5 g saturated), 0 mg cholesterol, 1 g protein, 8 g carbohydrates, 16 mg sodium

Cook’s note: For a festive touch, garnish the prepared cocoa with marshmallows, cinnamon sticks or whipped cream.
