NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — In response to the tragic shooting in Newtown, CT, New Hanover County schools are beefing up security.

Sheriff Ed McMahon has developed short term plans to ensure safety to all elementary school students, faculty and staff upon their return to school on Wednesday.

Longer term security options will be reviewed at the next County Commission meeting next Monday. That meeting is at the New Hanover County Courthouse at 6 p.m.

Just the elementary schools? What about the middle and high schools? Don’t the people there deserve to be safe too?

Middle and high schools already have deputies present.

Several well trained and armed teachers and staff throughout the building will be a lot more effective than one or two officers who would probably not be near the intruder.
