WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington’s Code Enforcement office is cracking down on sweepstakes parlors still up and running despite laws effectively stopping the businesses.

A letter to sweepstakes owners lets them know they have until February 9 to “cease and desist” or face a $100 fine. The shops also face a $200 fine for more violations.

Wilmington Police should be closing them now….
The state says they are no longer legal….
You can ride the streets and see folks breaking the law all over town.

What are you talking about? Flips had over 10 to 12 years to remove his sign after that area was annexed into the city. Although I do not agree with some things going on, you have no idea what you are talking about!!

While I don’t agree with the ruling, they came down harder on Flips BBQ for a freaking sign that has been there for many years! Wilmington is becoming a joke… The perfect definition of incompetence.

Who exactly wants the sweepstakes closed. Don’t say state government that is not an answer. There was someone or group who orginally said we don’t want them. And really what is the reasoning behind it. Why do they want them shut down. Most people don’t really care because they don’t play or work there.
In this economy why put hundreds of people out of work. These people instead of paying income tax and spending money at other businesses will not be drawing unemployment from the state, applying for food stamps and other federal programs. As far as I can see the only problem the state has is that they don’t make enoung money off them.
Let each county decide if they stay or go. Set reasonable usage fee for each machine, use this money collected for that counties school system. It seems like the lottery with all its millions can’t seem to take care of it.
I really would like some answers. Do you have a reporter that acturally can find this out and get an answer that is not political hogwash.

being taken by the authorities to collect the unpaid millions in taxes and fees which are owed by the operator of several of the local biggies who also happened to be a significant supporter of former Governor Perdue and former Lt Governor Dalton?

Seems to me there was a significant flap over that and it was reported by WWAY and the Star News.

Your comparing apples to oranges here. Your comparing different schedules of offenses first of all. You can drive 4 hrs away and sweepstakes are legal and legit businesses that pay taxes to the state and/or county they reside. They help people pay their bills and feed their children. And dont say “Well they dont they destory peoples lives” People destroy their own lives by their own choices. Parlors dont ruin lives. They promote the economy and ALL of them pay TAXES to YOUR state and YOUR city. Were in a reccession no matter how you poke it, this is a multi billion dollar industry, I should know because I work for one of the biggest sweepstakes companies. My mother works 70 hrs a week, my father is bed ridden due to a stroke, my wife, my kid, my pets; all rely on my income to support mortgage, insurance, food, essentials. The ruling is bullshit and so is your opinion on it sir.

If they are illegal under the law, then fine them or arrest them now. Why give an illegal enterprise a month to shut down? Do you give a dope dealer a month to quit his business if you catch him making a sale?

Why ban sweepstakes ? They didnt do anything to anyone except put a hole in in someones pocket or make them fatter. Keep sweepstakes if your going to keep the lotto .
