BURLINGTON, NC (AP) — Police in Burlington have released the name of the pilot killed in the crash of a single engine plane.

Assistant Police Chief Chris Verdeck said that 57-year-old David Gamble of Greensboro died when his plane came down around 6 a.m. Wednesday about 5 miles northeast of the Burlington-Alamance Regional Airport.

Gamble was alone on the plane. No one on the ground was hurt.

The plane was a Pilatus PC-12 owned by Labcorp, a medical testing company in Burlington. A spokeswoman with the Federal Aviation Administration says the plane was heading to Morristown, N.J.

FAA and National Transportation Safety Board officials were expected in Burlington on Wednesday to begin the investigation into the cause of the crash.

Verdeck says he doesn’t know if Gamble issued a distress call before the crash.
