WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Yesterday, we told you about a Bladen County man severely beaten in the county jail. Today, we spoke with Joshua Ward, 30, who is recovering from gashes to his head and three broken ribs.

“After that first or second hit to my face, I just curled up in a ball,” Ward said in his room at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.

Ward is feeling the sting of pain. His chest and sides are intensely aching from several broken ribs after being beaten in the Bladen County Jail Tuesday afternoon. Although he decided to tell his side of what happened, it hurt him to even move his mouth after he took many blows to his jaw.

“I just went to sleep, and the next I know, they started beating me,” he said.

Ward says after being arrested on a failure to appear warrant, deputies placed him in a cell with about seven other men. He said he kept to himself and told the other guys he was going to sleep. Ward remembers suddenly being awakened by two black men and a white man punching and dragging him.

“They drug me off the bunk,” Ward said. “They continued to beat me. I remember hollering help and I just blacked out.”

Investigators say those three men are Matthew Johnson, Twasjay Brown and Darryl Simmons. They are each charged with assault inflicting serious bodily injury and second degree kidnapping.

“This is very unfortunate,” Bladen County Sheriff Prentis Benston said. “We are taking this incident very seriously to make sure it does not happen again. We are conducting an internal investigation to see what changes need to be made.”

Meanwhile, Ward maintains that he should not have been arrested in the first place for failure to appear in court on a traffic infraction.

“When I was arrested, it was shocking, because I had been in court,” he said.

Sheriff Benston says security has been increased at the jail and an internal investigation is underway to look into what jail staff could have done to help avoid the beating.

The same thing happened to my son in law last year.He was pulled in our driveway and charged with a DUI..He was working on his car and was driving up and down our dirt road and he just happened to go on the high way for a min.heThey claimed they were stopping him for speeding but wasnt charged for that, they thought they had a better charge when they realized he had a beer. The breathalizer didnt even register a legal limit. They took him to jail and while I was sitting outside with the bondsmen waiting for him to come out with completed paperwork they put him in a cell and he was jumped and beaten pretty bad.he should have never been placed in a cell to begin with..Needless to say his DUI charges was dismissed!!

Hey Sheriff Bentsen why don’ty you train your people how to watch TV? That would be the first thing to do. If someone had been doing their job by watching the screens that project the images that the cameras produce then and only then would Mr. Ward have been protected as you are sworn to do in your oath of office.

The Bladen County Sheriffs Department failed to protect this citizen in their custody. Why are nonviolent offenders housed with known violent ones in the first place?

I like the earlier comment on internal investigastions never being made public.. Just a little insight, see the story and video of Mike Hubbard (former Bladen County Jailer). Umm.. Deputies do not work in the Jail.. Jailers do.. They are not sworn officers and their scope of practice is maintaining the custody of incarcerated individuals IN THE JAIL.. Most of the time there are 2 to 3 jailers maintaining 90 to 100 individuals at a time.. yea that many in a Jail built to house 79… If you want something different, voice it by VOTING for it.. The comment made about why Joshua Ward was arrested was rediculous… Maybe we should use your train of thought and trust every statement made.. Try this: Individual with bloody knife standing next to a stabbed victim.. ok.. still with me?? You ask the individual, “Did you stab them??” they reply, “No, I was hanging out, watchin tv.” you say, “Well what about the knife?” and they reply ” I cut up a tomato with it.” In your world, maybe you should have him make you a salad, while somebody else comes to clean up the mess.. But in the real world when a notice is given, ie: Mandatory Directives, Signed Court Orders or even common sense on obvious crimes, they cannot hold court on the street and contest the individuals account there.. I’m sorry but if you have a Warrant, Order for Arrest… plan on going to the Magistrates Office, and explaining to a Magistrate why you didn’t go to court and why the right of Due Process does not apply to you.. Lemme know how that turns out.. Otherwise arm-chair police officers will continue to bash and vocalize their beliefs simply based on what they have heard through their cousins, cousin, who one knew this other person, who was punished for doing something wrong, or watched on tv right on and on… I love the comment on the super police force in Bladenboro… Should we discuss your rebuttle?? I’m sure you were cited for breaking a law that only applies to every one else but you.. Lemme guess you live in Bladenboro.. You have been in the “Third World” community based setting so long your opinion weighs more than that of a General Statue..?? I’m sorry.. In laymans terms that means ” If you break the Law, and get caught, learn from it.” Don’t scrutinize those for doing their job.. sigh.. I love yall.. and I mean that from the bottom of my heart.. thanks WWAY for letting me vent ..

Ask the commissioners of that county or better yet County Manager Greg Martin where’s the money to build a jail?? BCSO has been trying to get a new jail since the 80’s. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it mentality isn’t working anymore. Duct tape won’t even help this old jail now!

Bladen County is beginning to look Third World. When I drive West on H-way 87 through Bladen on way to Fayetteville I am appalled. West of Elizabethtown through Dublin and on to Tar Hell is one eyesore after another.

Many houses and property are well-maintained and attractive, but next door to these clean properties are the most derelict, junky houses with junk in the yards and spilling out of the car ports.

The county needs to enforce some zoning laws . . . and soon.

Wow. Get a traffic citation and nearly get murdered. No, thanks. Will avoid that crazy place! Sounds like a Third World backwater.

You are the type of person that whines when the police are doing there jobs and then whine when YOU FEEL they are not.

Bladen is sorry. This should have never happened. If bladen would do what they are supposed too. Where were the deputies that was supposed to have been watching the cameras? O I know, they where doing just what we pay them for: NOTHING. Mr. and Mrs. Ward sue the MOLD off of them. We have the sorriest jurdiction system I have ever seen. Look at the case where the dog ate the nine day old infant. Dismissed, What? That was a child incapable of doing anything for itself. Someone should have been charged for the simple fact of having that many dogs in the house from the beginning. ONLY IN BLADEN COUNTY.

The jurors are the ones who did not find her guilty and the jurors are made up of people like you so dont blame law enforcement for the verdict. Get your facts straight before making a comment. Thats whats wrong with alot of these comments being made they only have whats being reported by the media. Everyone should know all the facts cannot be given until the investigation is over.

Please tell me what in the world has anything you said have to do with a man being beaten while in jail??????? The route you are talking about are rural areas not city like Fayeteville. While I dont keep a messy yard and house, I pay taxes, so If I wanted to I could. The goverment already tells us what to do enough. Why should anyone care what you think of there house, yard, or car. Last i CHECKED THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A FREE COUNTRY. Alot of our rights have been taken away because people are offended, people are all up in others business. You keep your house , yard and property like you want them and let everyone else keep theres like they want. Even , if it offends your fairy tale eyes, it does nothing to harm you or anyone else in any way for people to have there propertys in disarray. Next thing you know people will want zoning because they dont like the color of there houses. Now if you dont like the way our county looks keep your butt out of it. Is there anything you would like to say about this poor man that has been beaten half to death, or do you not like his looks eithier.?

2015 years 8 months ago

When you keep a messy property with junk cars in the yard, trash everywhere, and all kinds of chaotic mess spilling out of your car port, you are not a civil person.

People who practice civility keep their properties clean so passersby do not have to look at their junk.

When your yard is junky, this signals to all that you are lazy and probably good-for-nothing.

Respectable people like clean neighborhoods, and they keep their properties clean and green.

Has a nice ring to it..

probably because one of the attackers is a white man.National news and marches at some point we have to use the brain for something worth while. Were is the injustice for the young man that was attack it seem like they have the people responsible for the act they are being charged with the crime. Were is the injustice.

2015 years 8 months ago

Why isn’t the Bladen County Sheriff charging these men with a “Hate Crime” ? If 3 white guys nearly killed a black man, it would be national news, marches, calls for new laws, and everything else.

Where is Jesse Jackson, Spike Lee, and all the other “Diversity Experts” ?

How come the sheriff’s office is not addressing the issue that this man was arrested in the first place? Do they not take into consideration when someone tells them they went to court that day and was told by his attorney his case was continued (a common tactic lawyers in the surrounding counties use to make sure their client pays…just continue and continue the case). Call the attorney and verify it..this is not making any sense.
By the way, the internal investigation results will not be made public.
Who will pay his medical bills? Why did it take so long for jail staff to render assistance? Again, a lot more questions than answers.

Why was it not noticed that a sheet was placed over the camera. How did the inmates get access to the camera. The guards who were SUPPOSE to be watching the cameras need to be FIRED!
