StarNews: 4 groups hope to open charter schools in Southeastern N.C. for 2014-15

Four groups in Southeastern North Carolina say they want to open charter schools in the 2014-15 school year – a move that, if approved, would more than double the number of charter schools in the area.

The applications, submitted to the state Department of Public Instruction, mark the largest outpouring of interest in charter schools in North Carolina since the state lifted the cap on the number of charter schools. By definition, charter schools are public schools that have fewer regulations than traditional schools – a fact that some educational management agencies are using to create new ways for students to learn.
