NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Fire Services and Emergency Management responded earlier tonight to what was believed to be a release of sulfur dioxide.

Crews arrived at Southern States Chemical at 4620 US 21 and determined the area was free of any harmful chemicals. The initial investigation indicates that there was a minor release during a start-up process at this facility. The release prompted the treatment of one person for non life-threatening chemical exposure.

Traffic was temporarily delayed along Highway 421. The incident didn’t require evacuation or further assistance from the regional hazmat team.
