WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Two weeks after cancelling the ceremony to receive the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, it appears former Sen. R.C. Soles will in fact get the award.

Phillip Fisher of the Long Leaf Pine Society confirms he received notification former Gov. Bev Perdue signed off on Soles getting the award December 31 before she left office.

Soles reportedly canceled the event to where the Order of the Long Leaf Pine was to be presented to him after learning there was no record of Perdue awarding him the honor

There’s no word on when Soles will get the award, which is regarded as the state’s highest civilian honor.

Soles left the General Assembly in 2011 after a record 42 years in office.

We have a long serving Senator who did well for his constituents.
We have a long serving Senator with a despicable private life serving in a very conservative area.
The Award was supposed to have been given and then the order authorizing it was mis-placed.
Now, all of the sudden we’ve found it
This order was authorized by a governor who inherited the second worst recession in U.S. history and has been vilified for it and the indiscretions of her predecessor. (Never mind the incompetence of her Admin)

OK – here’s a thought.
The award itself is now cheapened by all of this. The tawdry character of the recipient, along with the questionable character of the authorizing entity have now brougt the Long Leaf Pine award lower in stature than the Girl Scout Award for selling the most cookies.

Perhaps we should just mail it to him and call it a day.

As a citizen of Columbus County for the past 71 years, I have known RC and his father and the rest of his family, and I must say they are good people and have done lots for this county.

RC has worked hard for Columbus, one of the poorest counties in the state, and he brought jobs here and made life a little easier for a lot of people.

He and his father have given hundreds of thousands to charities. Back in the 1970s when my niece was injured in an auto accident (a drunk driver plowed into her), RC paid her medical expenses, and he also gave my son and daughter-in-law money for gas to travel back and forth to Duke hospital when both of them were unemployed. How many politicians would have done this? Not many.

Does RC deserve the award? Hell yes. He’s a good man no matter what others say about him. And who gives a damn about his love life or anyone elses.

Congratulations RC for a job well done.

O.K. Now I get it. Since there probably aren’t 3 moral brain cells to rub together in Columbus County, people like this blogger are willing to sell their ethics to any pervert with enough money to buy allegiance.

42 years in office and your county is still one of the poorest in the state.. Yeah, he did a great job…

“And who gives a damn about his love life”
You call an old man allegedly molesting underage boys for the past 30 years his “love life”?

You people supporting Soles are as dumb as a box of of rocks. No matter how much “good” he has done, his behavior is not normal or civilized, and therefore he has not earned the trust of normal, civilized people. Thankfully the people of District 8 just elected a respectable replacement, offering a sign that they may actually be ready to join the rest of us in the civilized world.

Even out of office, Bev Perdue is still keeping her name around with her BS decisions. Worst. Governor. Ever.
I’m surprise she didn’t pardon everyone in prison on her last day in office.

This award officially means nothing now.

He’s been a good public servant, and I have always liked him.

As for those “boys” (none were boys–all were legal age) he was trying to help out, they did nothing but turn on him because he stopped giving them money.

We here in Columbus know the man. You all do not know him. If you did, you would not be so hateful in your condemnations.

Congradulations RC on your award.

You need to get your head out of the sand. And you are wrong about the age of those kids he preyed on. They were boys. They were not old enough to give legal consent. I have witnessed first hand what effect a child molester has on his victims. Someone I love dearly was molested thirty years ago, and she is still affected by what was done to her. She has never let it rule her life and the advantage she had over these boys is that she came from a loving home with two parents and siblings who love her. These boys didn’t have that.
