WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Two weeks after cancelling the ceremony to receive the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, it appears former Sen. R.C. Soles will in fact get the award.

Phillip Fisher of the Long Leaf Pine Society confirms he received notification former Gov. Bev Perdue signed off on Soles getting the award December 31 before she left office.

Soles reportedly canceled the event to where the Order of the Long Leaf Pine was to be presented to him after learning there was no record of Perdue awarding him the honor

There’s no word on when Soles will get the award, which is regarded as the state’s highest civilian honor.

Soles left the General Assembly in 2011 after a record 42 years in office.

We have a long serving Senator who did well for his constituents.
We have a long serving Senator with a despicable private life serving in a very conservative area.
The Award was supposed to have been given and then the order authorizing it was mis-placed.
Now, all of the sudden we’ve found it
This order was authorized by a governor who inherited the second worst recession in U.S. history and has been vilified for it and the indiscretions of her predecessor. (Never mind the incompetence of her Admin)

    OK – here’s a thought.
The award itself is now cheapened by all of this. The tawdry character of the recipient, along with the questionable character of the authorizing entity have now brougt the Long Leaf Pine award lower in stature than the Girl Scout Award for selling the most cookies.

Perhaps we should just mail it to him and call it a day.
