CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Hundreds of people took a chilly, winter swim off of Carolina Beach this weekend for the 9th Annual Polar Plunge. Participants young and old, clothed and bare, lined up to sponsor New Hanover County’s Special Olympic Program. Proceeds will benefit over 500 athletes, providing them with year-round sports training and games.

“We have spring games, fall games, social activities, summer camp, and the list goes on,” said Special Olympic Coordinator Tiffany Lesley. “That is what this whole event is for, to sponsor our athletes.”

Lesley hopes to have raised close to $40,000, the cost of running the special olympics program yearly.

Congrats to Dustin Templeton, a special athelete who is the top donation fundraiser for this event this year and for the last several years. He works hard to make sure he raises funds and promotes the event.

Great job Dustin!!!!!
