NHSO sergeant earns K9 instructor certificate

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has two new tools to help fight crime.

Sgt. James Croom recently completed more than 400 hours of training to become the first certified K9 officer instructor in the county. He will be able to put those skills to work training the department’s newest K9: a 2.5-year-old German Shepherd named Howie.

“Canine training constantly evolves,” Sgt. Croom said. “Some of the stuff I had already learned has changed somewhat. Every day you are learning something new with the dogs.”

Croom says the new training teaches officers to reward their dogs for all of their hard work.
