WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — There’s been a lot of talk about how to make public schools safer in the wake of the shooting in Connecticut late last year. Now some North Carolina lawmakers are working to make private schools safer.

A Senate bill filed this week would give administrators in private schools the power to allow weapons on school grounds. The administrator and governing body could give written approval to anyone trained and with a permit to carry a gun, teargas or a stun gun.

The bill applies to private and church schools.

Supporters expect the bill to make private schools safer and parents more comfortable. Parents at Wilmington Christian Academy agree.

“In the past few years with school shootings and stuff, I have been kind of concerned that there really is not any security,” said Christina Sullivan, a mother of four students at WCA. “There are security measures in place at our school, but if an intruder came in, there is no way anybody could protects themselves. The intruder would have the gun, and nobody else would.”

Sullivan says if the administrator is in the position to educate her children, he should also have the power to protect them.

But some parents say a weapon could still end up in the wrong hands. Jason Augst, who also has kids at Wilmington Christian Academy, is not quick to support a change.

“It’s not difficult to get a concealed weapons permit if you have a clear background and can pay the fees and take the class,” said Augst.

The bill now heads to a Senate committee for consideration.

Don’t panic all you hippy liberals out there. You can still enjoy that safe feeling you get being in a gun-free zone.

If some deranged gunman were to show up at the school where your kids go, wouldn’t you want there to be someone on scene who has the means to kill or at least incapacitate the shooter before the shooter murders your kids?

I admit I don’t know every piece of information about this particular story. For example, can SRO’s be stationed at ALL schools, including private ones? If so, I’ll concede that only LEO’s should be able to have guns on school property. However, if the city or the county canNOT provide LEO’s at private schools, I absolutely agree that school administrators should have the option of neutralizing any threat to the children that we entrust to their care.

You’re going to have every side-lipped athiest from Das to Maj ranting about fictional books, imaginary grey bearded men sitting on a cloud watching over us while dengerating anything and everything that has anything to do with any sort of “faith” other than pure spontaneous existence. Thanks for starting that one…again!

The fact is, that in this REAL world where parents do no take responsibility for Lil’ Johnny or Lil’ Suzi-Q that may have extraordinary mental deficiencies and don’t want them broadcast to the rest of society. They instead allow them to walk around unmedicated, undiagnosed and fully unchecked when they indeed, should be! In this REAL world where our legal system allows convicted violent felons to walk freely among us fully unchecked, when they indeed should be, a common sense approach to human preservation is necessary. That should be decided with the common sensical decision making of said school administrators.

You see, with all humor aside this really has nothing to do with God, religion, Catholicism or the Southern Baptist convention. It has to do with how we handle the people in our society that for some reason, do not believe they have to follow the law, that do not receive the medical attention or incarceration they need and feel it necessary to eradicate innocent human beings for their own narrow-minded and impulsive purposes.

Vog, things are quickly changing in this nation. People are getting fed up and are doing due diligence for self-preservation. We have a legal system that doesn’t work that intentionally puts violent criminals in the position of walking among us everyday. Like it or not, not everybody believes the KumBaya principle is real and that all is happy-go-lucky, lahh-tee-dahh.

Teaching about the love of Christ – under the watchful eye of a Christian Administrator with a gun.
At least this law gives administrators the choice to approve or not allow…….

I wonder how the Vatican would feel if American Cardinals and Bishops petitioned for allowing guns on Catholic school grounds? How would the Southern Baptist convention feel about that?
It’s an interesting social dilemma.
What would Jesus do?

Well you just made the case for disalloing “barny fife’s” from being in charge of school security, I’d much rather see private individuals be respo nsible for their own safety and that of our kids!
