SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Southport’s police chief is speaking out after one of his employees was arrested over the weekend.

Last week the Brunswick County Sheriffs Office received a complaint about Anthony Buntyn, a clerk for the Southport Police Department. Saturday deputies arrested Buntyn and charged him with disseminating obscenity and impersonating a police officer.

“These are pretty serious charges, and even though he was a civilian employee, our citizens can’t have somebody here representing the City of Southport Police Department like that,” Southport Police Chief Jerry Dove said.

Investigators say Buntyn sent a woman a text message with a picture of him masturbating and told her he was a sworn police officer in Southport.

Chief Dove says he was shocked to hear this, because he says Buntyn has done a lot of good things throughout the city.

Chief Dove wants to make sure this never happens again.

“I certainly want to apologize to the citizens for having something like this happen,” Dove said. “I didn’t foresee it coming, and like I said, my good intentions aren’t always crowned with success.”

Dove says Buntyn is suspended without pay pending the results of an internal review of his department by the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.

Buntyn is in the Brunswick County Jail under $10,000 bond.
