LELAND, NC (WWAY) -- The Town of Leland held a joint meeting of the town council and the planning board to seek public opinion on the towns sign ordinance. Business owners were out in force to speak out against the new rules, which size signs based upon a business’s zoning.
The town is considering a five year period to allow existing signs to come within the ordinance.
Council members understand the frustration of small business owners.
“The business owners have decided at this point that they are still not quite sold on the idea of a sign ordinance at all as most businesses aren't,” Leland Mayor Pro Tem Pat Batleman explained. “It's probably one of the most difficult things that municipalities have to deal with.”
The council will take up the issue of how long to allow existing signs to comply at their next meeting.
