WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Considered to be the philosophical godfather of the state's community college system, Cape Fear Community College honored Dr. Dallas Herring today.

The school unveiled a portrait of herring in its library. Duplin Winery and the North Carolina Community Colleges Fund sponsored the painting.

"I think his focus was very clear in that everybody deserves an education," CFCC President Dr. Ted Spring said. "What they need to do is work hard at that, and he was all about providing equal opportunity for education for everyone in the state."

Dr. Herring was born in Rose Hill in 1916. He began his public service career at 23, when the people of Rose Hill made him the youngest mayor in the country.
