CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY)– Emotions ran high during a town meeting in Carolina Beach, where leaders voted to rezone a residential area for a waste disposal site.

The town was forced to find a new plot of land after Sunny Point Military Terminal told the town it has until June 1 to clean up the property the town is currently using. Residents of Carolina Beach came out to reason with Town Council to not rezone the land behind Federal Point Shopping Center.

After being sworn in, nine residents went in front of Town Council to give their reasons on why they should find other location for the disposal site. Residents said the area behind Federal Point Shopping Center is the gateway into the community and that putting the disposal site there would compromise the history of the land. They were also concerned having the disposal center in their back yard would devalue their property and disturb the peace with all the added noise from trucks going in and out of the facility.

A petition with 287 signatures was presented to the council. Councilman Tom Bridges told residents that the council had explored every other option possible and that this piece of land was the most ideal for the community. The town council voted 4-1 in favor of the rezoning.

Thought I’d ask the question because to me it looks like the Town Council was being truthful that they had looked at the alternatives and found no other property that was acceptable.
Is this a waste disposal site or waste transfer site? Just curious as waste hauling is a very troubling subject.

Really? A waste disposal site right next to Carolina Beach State Park and along the bikeway???? Why not just use Freeman Park? It’s already full of trash/human waste. Just increase the annual fee to $200 per yr and that should make it all better!!! (BTW, Look up the word idiots in Websters’, there is picture of CB Town Council)

Actually, the current waste disposal site is, in fact, located next to CB State Park on land owned by the federal government. It’s been located there for many years. The proposed new location is off of Lake Park Blvd behind the old shopping center where the (closed) theater and the old Food Lion were located. While I’m not saying the proposed new location is ideal, you might want to get your facts straight before throwing the “I” word around.

The last transfer station was across the street from Mike Chapelle Pake so what is your beef? I bet you are a transplant.
