WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Joe’s Crab Shack possibly coming to Wrightsville Beach has been a hot topic for a couple of months in the town. Tonight, the Board of Aldermen met at Town Hall while Joe’s Crab Shack pitched its plans to build near Johnnie Mercer’s Pier. The result: Joe’s Crab Shack will not open a location at the pier.

The restaurant would have held 270 guests. That means it would have to provide more than 80 parking spots in what residents say is an already crowded area.

“I don’t have a concern about them here,” Wrightsville Beach resident Nelson Britto said. “What I have a concern about is specifying designated spaces for the crab house. Eighty-five is almost a whole block up and down both sides of East Salisbury Streets.”

The company’s Director of Real Estate said Joe’s would not need parking to operate the restaurant. Other Joe’s Crab Shacks have run efficiently without parking. The restaurant planned to offer 30 parking spots for employees near Kohl’s and Landfall, but residents said those are miles away from the beach and would make it tough for employees.

“It is not an easy walk for employees in the rain, cold,” Britto said. “That doesn’t sound very practical to me quite frankly.”

There are nine requirements the restaurant needed to meet to operate with a conditional use permit and a parking exception. Joe’s Crab Shack just did not make the cut.

Does that firm really expect their employees to park at Kohls and Landfall and walk 5 miles? That is ridiculous. A restaurant will not survive with no parking, not here.

Not counting employees parking spots Joe’s was still coming up short. WB may have done Joe’s a favor – and protected their town at the same time.
Joe’s doesn’t attract tourists – they benefit from tourism. So protect the beach parking first.
Mayfaire is a better location for them.
Parking is free
Access is easier
Shoppers are nearby as are residents.

Just wondering. Where do all of the patrons of the Palm Room, Neptune, Red Dogs and all of the other eateries on the beach park. Not even sure all of those I just mentioned still exist Last time I was on the beach and frequented those spots I parked in a metered public space. Does the restaurant at Chrystal Pier accommodate all of their patrons in their own lot. I don’t see how. Again, I am just asking. Don’t set a double standard for the new guy trying to come into town.

Wait a minute!
When I was a kid…my brother and I had to walk 100 miles each way to school and back! My older sister got to ride the bus :-(
My brother and I left 3:00 AM in the morning…and got to school 8:30 AM on the same day of the week…but the following week :-( Never hurt us one little smidgeon either!
I personally know some people that would have applied at JCS for a job…as long as a JCS limo picked them up and dropped them back at Landfill ( I mean Fall) each day, every day, as part of their job package…and…as long as their salaries were at least $152,000 per year.
WB and JCS couldn’t offer that??? Then forget it!
Sounds like some BIG shots never got involved with…”Just Say No To Drugs”.
That much is obvious…HA!!!!!
