BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Brunswick County schools responded quickly to the community's concerns regarding school safety following the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary. Now leaders are starting to feel the pinch in their pockets.

School officials placed resource officers in every elementary school and are continuing to upgrade security systems including additional cameras and electronic door locks in schools. These expenses were not a part of conversations during last year's budget talks, but they are now.

With the budgetary needs, the Brunswick County Board of Education has decided to operate on a staggered bell schedule starting in the next school year.

The staggered start schedule will put more than $1 million back into the school system.

While the decision has been made, it isn't clear yet which schools will start early and which schools will start late.

BC Staggered Start

I hope that my high school child will be able to get out of school and be home to see her younger sibling off the bus. If not, then not only is the school system saving money but they are causing me to have to come up with child care money out of pocket and I only make minimum wage now. Great thinking.

I honestly don't see how

I honestly don't see how this is going to save the school system any money what so ever. I'm going to be a senior never year and I also have a job, how in the world would I be able to work with have being released from school at 3:50. option 2 is clearly the better choice, the little kids need to get to school last because they need there sleep and the high scholars need to go to school first so the can get put at the reasonable time of 2:50 so we can work. Brunswick county school systems isnt going to be saving any more by doing this, this just goes to show yet again how dumb Brunswick county school board is.

You don't need a job, Emily

From what I see in your post you need to stay in school and study your grammar, punctuation and spelling.

I'm glad the Board of Ed got smart and stopped listening to that whiney board member Cooke. When the Board discussed stopping the staggered schedule for 2012-13 she claimed no one spoke to her in favor of the staggered schedule. She is either a liar or has a memory problem because I was one of about 15 people at a meeting who told her of our support for the staggered schedule. My kids did well under the old staggered schedule, but the new Option 2 is probably better for the children. Hopefully the Board and BCS County Office will commit to this program and let it settle in. There are too many programs forced down teachers' throats that are abandoned after one year, and that is insufficient time to see if they really work.

Unacceptable

This is totally unacceptable. My oldest child is already spending 25 hours a week on the bus. You read correctly, 25 hours a week on the bus, 5 hours a day. What can be done about this? Absolutely nothing. Removing buses to save money will only increase travel time and cause overcrowding on the bus as well. Has any other parent noticed increased security at their schools? I haven't thats for sure. Just two weeks ago, a 5th grader brought live ammunition to school and was playing with them on the bus. I cant believe The Board of Education made this decision when safety on the bus is already an issue. They seriously need to rethink this.

Really - 25 hours a week on the bus??

I would love to hear some details on how your child spends 25 hours a week on the bus. What school do they attend and what part of the county do you live in?

Staggering the schedule will not add to your child's bus time. The buses would still basically run the same routes.

The only way to stop kids from bring something like ammunition to school is:
A. Parents frisk them before they leave home in the morning and not leave such items accessible to them.

Or

B. Search every kid before they get onto a bus or enter the school building.

Staggered Hours Worked

Our family could not find ONE parent who objected to the staggered hours, and we were shocked when it was shelved. Not only does it ease the traffic some, teens are nocturnal beings - ours seemed to thrive with the later school start.

Really? How about we start

Really? How about we start school at two in the afternoon and get out at 10 that night? Get real!

Having a resource officer is

Having a resource officer is no guarantee of more safety for students or staff. Anyone with malicious intent will not be deterred by someone walking around campus. Parents were not given the option on hiring them and now have no option on staggered bells. It didn't work before so why will it work a year later? Look at the top heavy administration building or cutting new programs teachers are constantly being bombarded with to teach.

They did work...

It did work last year. It just inconvenienced a few people and it was an election year so the school board changed it to keep their seats. Funny how some people want the government to save money as long as it doesn't affect or inconvenience them. Stop Spending!!! (just don't stop spending it on me)

I live close to a school and

I live close to a school and traffic is cut considerably when they use a staggered schedule. This in itself makes it much safer for the kids.

Our childrens safety is a

Our childrens safety is a lot more important than what time school takes in!

school

Would someone please explain to us how this saves money? The same amount of students and teachers and buses are going to school so how does a time change save money? I believe the school board is just sneaking this back in being their was so much disagreement last time they enforced it so this way they claim to save money. I smell rats and lots of them.

The staggered bell schedule

The staggered bell schedule saves money because they only need approximately half the buses. The buses run a first route and pick up the kids for the early start and then go back out and run a second route for the later start. Right now everyone starts at the same time so the bus only runs one route instead of two. That is less equipment that has to be maintained and few drivers being used.

Good Idea

I thought the staggered schedules worked great last time. I have a child in high school and in elementary school. The early drop off for the younger child worked great and the high school student was able to get himself off to school just fine in the mornings. Beats cutting teachers in the classroom.

The staggered school times

The staggered school times were working great, and saving the taxpayers of Brunswick County around 1 million dollars a year, however one of the county commisioners wives decided money was no object and pushed ahead to go back to the old way of doing business as I recall and to her saving taxpayers money so that teachers could keep a job wasn't a priority, anytime a single dollar bill of taxpayer money can be saved and returned to the people it was stolen from this should be a #1 priority of public employees.

Proposed Staggered Schedule

According to StarNews article:

What is being proposed:
Option 1:
Elementary bell times – 7:50 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.
High school bell times – 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
Middle school bell times – 8:50 a.m. to 3:50 p.m.

Option 2:
High school bell times – 7:50 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.
Middle school bell times – 7:55 a.m. to 2:55 p.m.
Elementary bell times – 8:50 a.m. to 3:50 p.m

dont mess with the kids

dont mess with the kids time... if you want to save money then cut your pay in half..

Well that got slipped in to

Well that got slipped in to being passed -- no one even had a clue that it was up for discussion.

Wow

Clearly the school board didnt learn its lesson from the first time they tried this! how bout figureing out something new that hasnt been tried already.
