WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man who pulled a knife on an off-duty officer at a bar and sent another to the hospital early Friday faces assault charges.

The bar fight happened around 1 a.m. at Sand Bar in University Commons on S. College Road.

Wilmington police say it all started when Rochi Kevin Sutton began groping girls in the bar. Someone then confronted the Sutton, trying to break up what police are calling the assault of several women.

That’s when Sutton pulled out a knife, cutting the man trying to break up the assault in the face.

After hitting a woman in the head with a beer bottle, an off-duty Wrightsville Beach police officer helped take Sutton out of the bar.

Once police arrived at the scene, the off-duty officer realized he was cut in the forearm.

The officer drove himself to the hospital, and the man cut in the face was transported by EMS.

Police found Sutton at a gas station nearby on College Acres, and took him into custody, and then to the hospital for treatment.

It appears that Sutton was badly beaten when he was walking to the store.

Sutton is charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. He is in jail under a $200,000 secured bond.

Why didnt the off duty cop? By the looks of this mugshot he got his butt beat, no gun needed.

“trying to break up the assault in the face”? Next thing we find is that “After hitting a woman in the head with a beer bottle, an off-duty Wrightsville Beach police officer helped take Sutton out of the bar.” That poor woman might have already been groped. Why did the officer have to hit her with a beer bottle? After leaving the bar, it “appears” he was badly beaten when he was walking to the store. Just curious; are we supposed to guess how that happened?

What a well written piece. :-)

…. that anyone can be a news editor these days.

This sounds like a story for the National Enquirer.

    Thanks for the laughs.

Obviously the article is not written very well. Maybe they meant that the guy hit the girl with a beer bottle and then the off duty officer took him out. Either way, had the officers not been there it could have been a lot worse for the girls.

Good thing he didnt have a gun.

It’s a shame one of the victims didn’t have a gun!

it was Sutton that hit the girl with a beer bottle, not the police officer… Just really bad journalism.

A panda bear walks into a bar he eats, shoots and leaves.

Seems to be the norm with today’s reporters. I can’t believe some of the gaffs I read in the Star News.
