JACKSONVILLE, NC (WWAY) -- In pre-season soccer the Wilmington Hammerheads shutout Mount Olive College 7-0 on Monday. The Hammerheads next pre-season game will be on Wednesday against UNCW.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -- UNCW junior Payne McLeod carded the second round's only
below-par-score (71) to win his first collegiate tournament and help the Seahawks to
the Seahawk Intercollegiate championship on Monday at the Country Club of Landfall.
The Seahawks edged 22nd-ranked Kent State by a single stroke after tying the Golden
Flashes with a second round score of 309. After playing in damp conditions in the
opening round, the teams played in harsh winds, with gusts measuring 20-30 miles per
hour.
For UNCW, it was their second Seahawk Invitational championship after also winning
the event in 2011.
McLeod claimed medalist honors by five strokes over a trio of second-place
finishers, including Costal Carolina's Andrew Dorn and Sebastian Soberberg and
Maryland's Tom Harris.
Joining McLeod in the top-10 was junior Josh Woodfox, who tied for 10th overall with
three other golfers. Dylan Harris placed in a tie for 14th. For both, it was
career-best finishes.
For the Seahawks, it was their first win of the 2012-13 season, besting their
previous top finish of second at the Fightin' Irish Gridiron Classic in early
October. In that tournament, McLeod also finished tied for second, his highest
finish prior to this tournament.
The Seahawks will play their final tournament of the regular season on Apr. 6-7 in
Charlotte, N.C., at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate. The Colonial Athletic
Association championships will be played in Southport, N.C., on Apr. 26-28.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -- Mat Batts and Terence Connelly were honored by the
Colonial Athletic Association as the circuit's Pitcher and Rookie-of-the-Week,
respectively, as UNCW posted a 5-0 record with a sweep of hot-hitting Georgia State
over the weekend.
Batts, who shared the honor with William & Mary's Jason Inghram, improved to 3-1
with a complete game shutout against Georgia State, the league's top hitting team
and second nationally, in the series opener. Batts held the Panthers in check,
allowing four hits and no walks. He finished the game with seven strikeouts and
lowered his earned run average to 3.05, ranking him 10th in the league.
Connelly, meanwhile, joins rookie teammate Steven Linkous as a Rookie-of-the-Week
honoree. The infielder from Garden City, N.Y., batted a robust .462 on the wee with
seven runs scored and six driven in. He drew a team-high seven walks and fueled the
Seahawks with a .682 on base average. Entering this week, Connelly has reached base
in 16 straight contests with an OBA of .567 over the span. He is one of two Seahawks
to start all 24 games this season.
The Seahawks host NC State on Wednesday at 6 p.m. before returning to conference
play for a three-game set at Old Dominion beginning on March 29 with a 6 p.m. start.
