FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Prosecutors are offering a plea deal to the Fayetteville man accused of raping and killing a 5-year-old girl more than three years ago.
The prosecution said Monday that it wouldn't seek the death penalty against 32-year-old Mario Andretti McNeill if he pleads guilty. McNeill's attorneys have until Tuesday to decide on the offer.
Jury selection began Monday in the trial. It's expected to take at least a week to seat the jurors and up to two months to try the case.
McNeill is accused of raping and killing Shaniya Davis in 2009. Shaniya's body was found in Harnett County on Nov. 16, 2009, six days after she was reported missing. Her mother also is charged in the case. Prosecutors say she sold Shaniya to pay off a drug debt.
