WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -– Junior lefthander Christian MacDonald, who dominated Davidson by retiring 13 straight batters at one stretch, has been named Colonial Athletic Association Co-Pitcher-of-the-Week for the first time in his career.
MacDonald (4-0) shared the honor with Delaware starter Matt Storen who allowed just four hits and no runs over seven innings in a 16-1 win over George Mason.
MacDonald won his fourth consecutive decision and sits at 4-0 on the season, his first season in the starting rotation after pitching out the bullpen his first two years. His seven and 1/3 shut innings against Davidson marked the fourth time this season he’s pitched into the eighth inning and he lowered his earned run average to 2.91.
Against Davidson, MacDonald allowed a pair of walks and a hit in the first three innings before settling down and not allowing another base runner until the eighth. He finished with four strikeouts and recorded 11 ground ball outs.
UNCW continues to shine in the CAA weekly awards as MacDonald became the sixth Seahawk to earn an award. The Seahawks have earned a total of eight weekly honors. The weekend rotation has earned the pitching honor at least once.
The Seahawks (23-10, 7-1 CAA) visit Elon on Apr. 10 to finish off their annual home-and-home series before hosting second-place Delaware (22-8, 9-3 CAA) in a key CAA series at Brooks Field. The series begins on Apr. 12 with a 6 p.m. start
RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina State has welcomed back Wes Moore to lead its women’s basketball program.
Moore spent two years as an assistant to late Hall of Famer Kay Yow, giving him roots in a tradition-rich program that has fallen off in recent years. It’s his job to build the Wolfpack back up again to a team that routinely finishes in the top half of the Atlantic Coast Conference and makes the NCAA tournament.
Moore said during a news conference Monday that Yow’s successful run proves the Wolfpack can win consistently.
Yow’s sister, athletic director Debbie Yow, says Moore’s link to the program is “icing on the cake” compared to his successful resume.
The school announced Friday it had hired Moore from Chattanooga, where he reached nine NCAA tournaments in 15 seasons.
