WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Just months after losing a tight race for Congress, Republican David Rouzer is ready to run again.

Rouzer says he’s better known now, which should make another campaign easier.

Rouzer lost to Rep. Mike McIntyre in November by only 654 votes. He says he’s ready for another shot.

About a dozen supporters joined Rouzer today for his announcement along the Wilmington riverfront.

The former state senator from Johnston County says his time in Raleigh makes him the best candidate to grow the economy and to cut spending at the federal level.

He says he fell short last year, because he was not well known. He plans to change that this time around.

“This is why I got into public service to begin with. This country is here for a reason. The founding principles of individual liberty and economic freedom deserve to survive,” Rouzer said.

Rouzer says starting his campaign early will get his name out more, help him raise money and hopefully take the seat McIntyre, a Democrat from Lumberton, has held since 1997.

If McIntyre runs again, he will face a primary challenge from New Hanover County Commissioner Jonathan Barfield.

Since losing in November, Rouzer says he has been doing some consulting work and farming, including growing tobacco for Phillip Morris.
