WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) —  It's not the Azalea Festival without Airlie Gardens. The site of each year's Garden Party is also a staple of the Azalea Garden Tour. It's been a fan favorite for years.

"I think they expect a grand Southern garden," says Janine Powell of Airlie. "They absolutely get that when they come out here."

To go along with the brilliant collection of spring color, there's also beauty in sculpture scattered across the grounds. A new sculpture of a single Azalea bloom was added to the gardens last year.

The gardens are filled with over 100,000 azaleas. The highlight of the grounds is the 465 year old Airlie Oak.

Hey you high paid county slackers! What happened to free admission for Azalea Festival weekend? It’s always been free on festival Saturday since it opened. I called and found out this years it’s not. I guess they need raises or someone felt the commoners don’t belong there. Someone shouldn’t forget who owns it….The Taxpayers!
