BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- The family of a Columbus County man killed in a single-car crash says there's much more to the story. They say his truck was not the only vehicle involved, and now they are looking for answers.
Those who knew him say Ricky Watts, 54, was the life of the party. His death on Monday has many of them wondering what exactly happened. His truck flipped on US 74/76 near the Brunswick Industrial Park close to Leland. Watts' nine and 11-year-old sons were in the pickup, both suffered minor injuries.
"She pulled up beside of them, she was blowing the horn and according to what the children said, one of the children said, she was shooting him the bird and giving him the finger," The boys' uncle Keith Ward said.
After that, 11-year-old Colton Watts braced for what he knew would be a bumpy ride.
Ward, a former police officer himself, says it's important for drivers to be patient and calm when they are behind the wheel.
Watts was a member of the Whiteville Fire Department and Lake Waccamaw Fire Department.
His funeral is Thursday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church in Whiteville.
