Sunny skies draw big crowd to Azalea Festival Parade

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Thousands of people lined the streets of downtown Wilmington Saturday for the Azalea Festival Parade, and it was a parade of princesses.

Young girls dressed as old-fashion southern belles held an umbrella in one hand and waved with the other.

Long-time fans of the Azalea Festival say they love the southern charm and history these belles bring to the festival.

"I love the bands and the girls dressed in the old costumes like the southern belles, the azaleas. It is all beautiful," Gloria Morgan of Wilmington said.

Gov. Pat McCrory made his second visit to the Port City since taking office to serve as Parade Marshal and lead it down North 3rd Street. The parade then turned around and headed back up North 2nd Street. Some folks say the less crowded end of the route is the best place to watch the parade.
