Security stepped up at Elizabeth City State

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) - Heightened security measures are in effect for Elizabeth City State University after a student was shot and wounded over the weekend.

A statement from the school said 23-year-old Jake Laumoli was shot in the leg Saturday night. He was treated and released from a local hospital. The campus was placed on lockdown after the incident.

University Police Chief Samuel Beamon said the shooting appeared to be in retaliation for a fight at a residence hall earlier in the evening.

Beamon said increased security will remain in effect until the semester ends. The last day of classes is May 2, with commencement scheduled for May 11.

Elizabeth City State issued a lockdown last Thursday night after a report of shots fired on campus. No injuries were reported in that incident.
