RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – The solution offered by the North Carolina House to retool teacher tenure rules has cleared a policy panel with little debate.
The House Education Committee voted Tuesday in favor of a measure sponsors say will make it easier to fire poorly-performing teachers.
The bipartisan measure differs from a proposal backed by Senate leader Phil Berger that would phase out job-protecting tenure over five years and replace it with teacher contracts of one to four years.
House members instead want to label teachers as having “non-probationary status” after four years of highly effective work. Teachers could lose that status – and possibly their jobs – if they receive poor evaluations two years in a row and don’t improve within the next two.
The bill’s next scheduled stop is the House floor.
