WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wrightsville Beach drawbridge will be closing tonight from 11:30 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Town Manager Tim Owens wants to let people know that they will not be able to come on or off the island during those times. Owens says they are staffing up the fire department and there will be an EMS unit on the island for safety precautions or emergencies.

Owens says they are doing everything they can do to be prepared. He says he wants to get the word out to visitors and people that live on the island to be prepared as well.

“Obviously if you had some kind of a house fire or some kind of emergency situation. That’s why we’re staffing up and making sure we are prepared and the bridge can be closed. This is just a little more intense as far as the work they are doing this time. So, we’re trying to get prepared,” Town Manager Tim Owens says.

The DOT and bridge maintenance contractor are doing work underneath the bridge. They are closing during the times they thought would work best for people coming and going from the island.

Owens says there will possibly be 16 more closures between now and October, when the DOT will start working on the top of the bridge.

… it would be a good time to update the StormTrooperLicensePlateScanningSystem. Pehaps they could also add an xray wallet scanner to make sure visitors have enough money on them to not be defined as potential vagrants.

My guess though is that they’ll leave the system turned on to protect them from potential terrorists that have vehicles capable of flying over the empty space between bridge ramps.

Hey, ya just can’t be too careful these days.

It might be more accurate to say the drawbridge is opening rather than closing.

All this attention on scanners/xray machines/etc. to see who’s coming from the East? Better look all around them for when a hurricane floods their gold mine of a paradise :-(
As Forrest Gump would say…”And that’s all I have to say ’bout that”

After several bridge closings with apparently no one noticing Governor McCrory announced that Wrightsville beach will be allowed to slip into the sea and disappear forever.
“Apparently they “closed” and no one noticed – so rather than spend money pumping sand on to their beaches, providing police protection monies, educating their young, and taking care of their roads – we are letting go of WB as a money saving budgetary item. The bridge will remain in the upright position until the land is completely eroded by Mother Nature”.
Mayor Cignotti – who earlier announced he was not running for re-election, was the last person allowed to escape, er, I mean move to the mainland before the bridge was raised.
On lookers along the intracoastal waterway included Wilmington Mayor Bill “Poofy-Do” Saffo who said while wiping a tear away “they could have been annexed and become part of Wilmington”.
In other news it’s being widely reported that a run on ABC stores happened yesterday and there are no hard liquors left in eastern North Carolina. Glass bottles were heard ‘clinking’ together on WB as it began drifting towards Portugal.
We’ll have more news at 11.

here at Surf City, we’re considering opening the swing bridge permanently and putting a border gaurd crossing at the high bridge.

We’ll be ceceding from North carolina and becoming the Duchy of Surf.

It will be similar to Monaco; but a tad more down to earth. I am passing on the opportunity to be Prince and instead will be focusing my efforts as Director of off shore gambling and other pleasures of the flesh.

Be certain to have your credentials, visa, and passport in order.

Your intemperate immoderate behavior has made you the laughing-stock of southeastern North Carolina. Kudos for working so hard at it. Stuff like that doesn’t just happen by accident.

  • Vog46

I hope you have a Formula One car race just like Monaco does.
    I’d go there for that

you know plenty of cash for the casino; a visa and passport. If we go, we go all out.
