SUNSET BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A Sunset Beach Police officer is under investigation after prosecutors had to dismiss a court case in which he was a witness, WWAY has learned from sources.

The sources say the issue stems from notes the unidentified officer used during the appeal of a DWI case in Brunswick County Superior Court. They say the officer’s notes and testimony differed from what he provided during a trial in district court.

When asked about the incident Friday afternoon, District Attorney Jon David told WWAY he did not have direct knowledge of what happened in court, except that the case had to be dismissed.

When reached by phone Friday evening, Sunset Beach Police Chief Lisa Massey said she was playing softball and a reporter could call her Monday for comment.

  • Jennifer Hewett says:

I know for a fact that Chief Massey worked until 7:00pm this evening.

  • Rickey Beck says:

Your reporter took a cheap sleezy shot at Chief Massey. Public employeees have a right to a private life and just because she didn’t drop what she was doing to talk to a reporter on a 2nd rate TV channel, the reporter got their panties all in a wad..Shame on you

  • Candace says:

So after reading these last post, I can safely assume you are a police officer. Where are you an officer at? Maybe it’s your department that needs to be investigated. If you know so much, is it on the officers you work with or for? Since someone called you Richard, are you the Richard that has been in the news so much lately, since he used to be an officer as well, hmmmmmmmm makes one wonder. Also, I’m not on Facebook, so I’m definately not on yours.

  • Kblue2221984 says:

I wasn’t talking to you about my Facebook sorry. That comment was for someone else that doesn’t like me. The reply I gave to you was I know things you don’t. I also stated that I know nothing about this Officer or his department. My comment was “I know some other pieces of garbage that need to be investigated” I was correct with all my Opinions about the Leland Officers. What makes you think I’m wrong now? Perhaps this is your “Opinion”? I never once asked what you thought of my comment nor was it a question. Sorry to say I have not been in the news, and “my job status” is just that (mine) Not yours. So feel free to voice your opinion. I do :) Say’s who!? Say’s the “opinionated” Kblue!!!

  • Kblue2221984 says:

Never fired. Still gainfully employed but I do know of a couple who shouldn’t be. XOXO. Your on my facebook you should already know all of this…….Say’s who!? Say’s the never fired Kblue!!!

  • guesty says:

Sorry Richard, I’ve never been to your Facebook page. You might be correct, you may have quit just before you were fired but I’m not positive about that.

  • Kblue2221984 says:

I know 3 more pieces of garbage that need to be investigated!!!! Say’s who!? Say’s Kblue!!!

  • guesty says:

I would guess that would include you in that list Richard. How did that SBI investigation end up at your last department before you were fired?

  • Candace says:

Kblue: Im starting to think you just have a personal vendetta against Law Enforcement, why is it that you only get started when it comes to various law agencies in Brunswick County. What is it?? Are you a criminal that just wants to discredit every law enforcement officer? I actually liked some of what you said when you began your “K-Blue” series, but your really starting to lose credit with me. Again, I think with some of the things that occurred in Leland needed to be brought to light and you had a funny, yet creative way of bringing that out. I think your peronal vendetta needs to stop now!!!

  • Guest20562 says:

What is the difference between throwing a case out because of a cop and Jon David throwing a case out because he wants to?

  • Jim Thomas says:

Sunset Beach Police Chief Lisa Massey’s preference for softball over accountability, disclosure, and rebuilding the public’s trust in the department is totally consistent with the imperial nature of the current Sunset Beach government. The sooner we can rid ourselves of the curse of Councilpersons DeVita and Joseph and Town Administrator Parker, the sooner the voters and taxpayers can demand courteous and responsive behavior from our Town’s so-called public servants.

  • Grand Ole Party says:

So she should have immediately stopped what she was doing and pander to WWAY? She advised them to call her on Monday during business hours, what more do you want genius? Who said she needs to REBUILD the public’s trust in the department? What did the department do to loose it? No clue right? I am just going to assume your mouth has the runs today and leave it at that.

  • South Brunswick says:

Since nothing you said makes sense, I am wondering if you used the word imperial as an adjective or a noun? Is it being used in a derogatory manner or complimentary? As an adjective the word impeial is synonymous with words such as heroic, monumental, grand, glorious, splendid and magnificent. I too think the current Sunset Beach Government is doing a magnificent job, and I am happy to see that you agree! Likewise, Chief Massey has done a splendid job with the Police Department and has no reason to rebuild the public’s trust. Reason being; there has been no betrayal of public trust. The incident at hand deals soley with a single officer and court testimony in a single case. Seems as though this incident is being handled promptly and the Chief has even been applauded by District Attorney John David for her actions. My advise to you Mr. Thomas is to know before you speak, and you will not sound like such an idiot!

  • South Brunswick says:

I am wondering if you are using the word imperial as an adjective or a noun? Is it meant in a derogatory manner or complimentary? I think you meant it in a complimentary fasion and I totally agree. The word imperial in its adjective form is synonymous with words such as glorious, heroic, grand, splendid, magnificent, noble and proud. I too feel that the current Sunset Beach Government is magnificent and I am glad to see that we can agree on something, because the rest of what you have to say makes no sense at all to me and tends to represent you as a total idiot. You say that as soon as the town can be rid of Council Members Devita and Joseph, the sooner the voters and taxpayers (who are one in the same) can demand courteous and responsive behavior from so-called public servants. Hmmmm, that leaves three other Council Members. If there was an issue with public servants not being courteous and responsive, don’t you think that the other three could do something about it? All five have a vote and when I last checked three votes “yes” beat the pants off of two votes “no”! Did you forget about the other three or did you just want to make a point to discredit your least favorite? As far as your other Police related false allegations, lets start with accountability. It is reported that there is a case of possible ethical misconduct that happened recently and it is being handled swiftly and decisively per District Attorney John David. Now lets go to disclosure. Everything concerning this incident has been disclosed and I would wager good money that you cannot give one example of anything that can legally be disclosed that hasn’t been. If you can, then enlighten us. As far as rebuilding the public’s trust, you must first lose the public’s trust. I find myself paying close attention to the Town of Sunset Beach on a regular basis and I have yet to notice that any part of the Town, especially the Police Department has lost the trust of anyone! I guess what this really boils down to is that you have a poor attitude and distrust in your local officials. If that is so, why don’t you move elsewhere? I don’t understand how you can risk your life and property in the hands of what you think are so-called public servants!

  • Satisfied says:

@Jim Thomas – I remember reading your complaints in the local newspaper, and I’ve got some news of my own for you – no matter who’s running the government at Sunset Beach, the police are NEVER going to swim out into the waterway/inlet to harangue duck hunters simply for bothering you with the sound of duck-hunting. (Although they MIGHT, if you remind them of what a big deal you are – I mean, your book can be found right between the likes of Leo Tolstoy and Dylan Thomas, Right? /eyeroll)

  • S.A. Gibson says:

This one is a good cop. and goes by the book. It must be a honest mistake. Ive known Jamie for a lot of years. He must have gotten two diffrent cases confused or some thing. One thing for sure is he is human and a human can make mistakes. Hell even computers make mistakes. mine does all the time. Give him a break..

  • Kblue2221984 says:

I have no problems with this Officer. None at all, it’s the crooked ones that make us all look bad. I know things you do not. My personal “vendetta” is indeed mine. Not yours. Sorry you don’t agree. Say’s who!? Say’s Kblue!!!

  • Grand Ole Party says:

It’s also the immature and ignorant ones that make us look bad, such as yourself. You seem to fancy yourself the Frank Serpico of Navassa. Your gloating has grown tiring.

  • Vog46 says:

I agree with you on this.
WWAY is a Wilmington news outlet not a resident of the town and she has no compelling reason to comment on this to them.
Why do news media outlets think small town politicians and department heads are on the job 24/7?
