RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A rising star in the North Carolina Democratic Party is heading to Washington for a position in President Obama’s Cabinet that may one day help Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx seek higher office back home.

The president announced Monday at the White House that Foxx is his nominee to succeed Ray LaHood as U.S. transportation secretary.

Foxx recently announced he wasn’t seeking a third term as Charlotte mayor. It’s not immediately clear when he’ll leave the job now. His tenure as mayor has been marked by a successful Democratic National Convention in Charlotte and expanded investment in public transportation.

University of North Carolina at Charlotte political sciience professor Eric Heberlig says a successful term for Foxx in Obama’s Cabinet could bring him the experience to run for US Senate or governor.
