CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Store manager wrestles alleged shoplifter to ground

READ MORE:

SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY) -- What would you do if you thought you saw someone shoplifting? A Shallotte store manager was faced with that situation and sprung into action, and it was all caught on camera.

Police say an unidentified store manager caught Christal Marlena Wunder, 32, trying to hide $12 worth of socks, plates and paint at the Dollar Tree in Shallotte. He asked her to put the items back or pay for them. When she refused, she tried to run for the parking lot. That's when the manager wrestled her to the ground, as you can see in this video posted on YouTube.

Police say it all happened while Wunder's two kids were waiting in the car.

The incident was the talk of the town Wednesday.

"I don't know what the world is coming to today," Shallotte resident Justin Durso said. "Number one you're going to leave your kids in the car while you're inside. That's not right there. Number two it's Dollar Tree. Nothing is over a dollar or two in there. If you can't afford that then there are government programs out there that will help you."

Wunder was taken to the hospital after the scuffle complaining of back pain.

Shallotte police cited her for shoplifting.

Despite Wunder's alleged back injury many still sided with the store manager.

"He did exactly what he was supposed to do," Durso said. "He told her you have to pay for it or put it back, and she got irate about it. She's now claiming he assaulted her, when it's clearly on video footage that she assaulted him in the first place."

We tried to talk to both Wunder and Dollar Tree, but both declined comment on this story.

Wow you people on here need

Wow you people on here need to get an damn grip., non of you know her situation and I'm sure if any of, you heartless people would do what you had to for you're kids. You don't huge someone unless you have walked in her shoes. And,for that sorry manager that had,to tackle an woman to the ground for $12 that's sad. I hope she sues thepants off of,him. Cause she does have back problems, and,if an wreak ass, grown man grabs you and, throws you to the ground back problems or,not i believe you would try to get up offthe ground. It,looked like he,was having a good, time holding her on her chest. As for her kids: she is a,great mother and herkids have never nor ever will be neglected.so how about all of you that has no life but sit, infront of the computer all dayand talk trash about people you dont know. how about spend yourworthless time doing something productive Other than critising someone !

Theft

Does not really matter what her situation is, when you steal from someone you are saying that you are ready to accept the consequences. Hopefully if she does sue she will have to do it from a cell. If she has kids how does she support them? By going out and shoplifting, sure looks like it.

Wow, great representation of

Wow, great representation of the town of Shallotte Mr. Justin Durso. Number one: Everything in the dollar store is a DOLLAR not a dollar or two. Number two: Assistance from the government, really? Where talking about the United States of America here. If you have no children and are not disabled then you are screwed in America! Now thanks for making Shallotte look like a bunch of country bumpkins!

oh stuff it ,shoplifting is

oh stuff it ,shoplifting is illegal ,considering what she took what was she gonna do go huff paint? she got caught period. If she had done that in my business she would have gotten worse.

Mr. Durso has nothing to do

Mr. Durso has nothing to do with making Shallotte look like "a bunch of country bumpkins." This has nothing to do with what the city of Shallotte looks like and everything to do with the entitlement that alot of people have today. The THEIF is the one that made this news. This happens in every city across America.
Please explain number two: "Assistance from the government, really?" There is too many that take advantage of every government assistance program there is. Bet you she is already on government assistance and not disabled and should have a JOB! I dont see how this has anything to do with "if you dont have children and are not disabled then you are screwed in America." Good grief! And why is it that you are owed something? I am guessing that if you are "screwed" then it gives you every right to steal?? Better yet, go live in another country and let us know how that works for ya! Quit playing the victim and stop your whinin'!!

For someone who claims to

For someone who claims to have back pain, she sure was putting up one heck of a fight. If she was so concerned about her back, then she shouldn't have struggled.

Has anyone said the age of her kids?

Doesn't anyone wonder????

If the thief was taken to the hospital for 'back pain' .... what happened to the two children who were negligently left alone in the car in the parking lot??

He still had no right to put

He still had no right to put his hands on her hes not a cop if that wouldve been me he wouldve have and injury too

Totally legal

North Carolina General Statutes § 15A-404 Detention of offenders by private persons - "A private person may detain another person when he has probable cause to believe that the person detained has committed in his presence: (4) A crime involving theft or destruction of property."

Gestacular

Nicely done. This is totally legal by the manager.

Are there laws that protect the manager and the business against injuries(or lawsuit regarding injuries) sustained by the criminal while being detained by that private person?

Vog

The real crime is wasting

The real crime is wasting our time with this ridiculous story. Is it really that slow a news day?

The money you wasted reporting this would have been of better use donated to a shelter or some other more charitable venture.

Shame on you!

we have donated more than

we have donated more than our fair share thru taxes. why dont you try running a business & let her steal from you. there will be a long line behind her

comment

The manager has the right to do this, but it is not very smart of him. I worked 21 years in law enforcement; I also worked 10 years in loss prevention side jobs. Although this may look like a good idea to some, it’s not, I had knives guns, and brass knuckles pulled on me at different times while doing the loss prevention jobs. I always was one step ahead of the bad guy because I had cuffs, pepper spray, and my gun as a last resort. If you are being robbed or stolen from and you are not armed and trained, do law enforcement a favor and just be the best witness you possibly can be, and go home to your family.

Well Troy, as long as we are

Well Troy, as long as we are encouraged to turn a blind eye and walk away from a crime it just emboldeneds the thiefs, if everytime a shoplifter knew they were going to be confronted by a store employee and assisted by a citizen and they were going to be arrested that would be a powerful deterrent, yeah, maybe a few would get hurt along the way, but that's life, you take a chance everytime you walk out of your house!

That is what the police are

That is what the police are for, they work off duty all over. I caught a shoplifter once that had a gun, knife and parole warrant out for his arrest. He told me that if he had not known that I was law enforcement from prior contact with him, he would have shot me to keep from going back to prison. So strap those rose colored glasses on tight when you leave your house, they may get knocked off one of these days by reality.

Fired or commended?

Many companies fire emplouees for interfering with a robbery or theft. We'll find out how Dollar Tree does this employee. Especially after the thief sues Dollar Tree.

I commend the employee. BUT, what will corporate do? Time will tell.

Good for the store manager!

Good for the store manager! There are too many times that people turn their heads to thieves. Thieves are a big part of the reason for higher prices in just about every aspect of our lives! Grocery stores now place things behind the counter because of thieves. There are huge wrappers on small, more expensive items because of thieves. Instead of being a thief, go get a JOB and try paying for things. No doubt that she will try and sue Dollar General. Sueing them for her being is thief is WRONG!!
