WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Halloween came early at Fanboy Comics in Wilmington for Free Comic Book Day this weekend. Hundreds of folks waited in a line for free comics and prizes. And they were easily entertained by people dressed as their favorite superheroes.

Even a few Tony Starks showed up for the event in their Iron Man disguises. Owner Adam Strobel says Fanboy is booming because of the Wilmington-filmed movie.

“You know, when they were filming it in town, the excitement for it,” said Fanboy owner Thomas Gilbert. “People are interested in it. They want to read the graphic novel the story line is based on.”

Others say comics just provide a sense of fantasy that is addicting.

“I think like anything else, it is escapism,” said comic book enthusiast Adam Strobel. “It is the fantasy of being able to do things other people can’t do. Being able to get away with things that you are not supposed to be able to get away with.”

The first hundred people in line received free prize bags and Chik-Fil-A biscuits. Hidden among some of the bags were gift certificates to Fanboy Comics and Regal Cinema in Mayfaire.
