BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — Rex Gore, the former District Attorney in Bladen, Brunswick and Columbus counties, will head to trial this summer for allegedly signing off on false expense reports for an assistant district attorney while in office.

Gore was scheduled to appear at the Brunswick County Courthouse Monday, but was a no-show. His attorney James Payne and Assistant District Attorney Chris Thomas spoke briefly with a judge before asking to set an August 19 date for the trial to begin.

There was also a request from the District Attorney’s Office that a judge from outside of Brunswick County be called in to handle the case because of Gore’s ties to the area after more than 20 years as District Attorney.

It was announced in court that Gore and former Assistant District Attorney Elaine Kelley will not be tried together in the case.

Kelley was also scheduled to appear in court Monday, but the judge granted her a continuance due to a scheduling conflict with her attorney.

This “solving cases in the back room” is called case management, which is a common practice throughout the state. It is done to help keep the courts from being clogged up with cases that can be taken care of without a trial.

  • Guest2020 says:

They don’t solve cases the way you are making it out. Every month the defense attorneys, the prosecuting attorneys and the judge sit down and discuss each case on the calendar. Sometimes they can reach an agreement and avoid a trial and sometimes they cannot. But nothing is final until the defendant agrees. If the defendant doesn’t agree then they get the trial. Nobody’s rights are being denied.

  • Guest20562 says:

if you are charged with a crime you have the right to a fair TRIAL not handled in the back room. Beside he ran his campaign on not solving cases in the back room.

  • Guest2020 says:

Ron Hewett did that to himself. He committed crimes. He paid for those crimes. If anything, he got off easy.

  • Kblue2221984 says:

This man needs some “jail time” After what he did to Sheriff Hewett. Nice photo by the way…….. I am so awesome it hurts! Say’s who!? Say’s Kblue!!!

  • guesty says:

Richard L. how is the SBI investigation going into your actions at the last department you were in?

  • Guest2020 says:

We all have our crosses to bear. Yours are just different from ours. Hopefully y’all can get rid of your wacky commissioner like we did with ours. Only, I don’t know if we are any better off with the replacement.

I heard that Leland Police having more trouble. They can’t seem to stay out of news. With this thing with Rex Gore and the Leland Police, makes one glad to be a resident of NHC. A county that doesn’t have these sorts of problems.

I can not believe it has taken more than 35 years to arrest this man! He has hurt and destroyed the lives of so many people through the years. I pray he will not get away with this. I don’t have high hopes of getting an unbiased Judge, though. Brunswick County is so corrupt that most Judges or attorneys are unwilling to lock horns with them. R.C. Soles is still walking free. That should tell us something.

  • Kblue2221984 says:

After “post” their should be a question mark. (?) <——-like this one. Guess because you were caught up in writing to a living legend you got excited and forgot. It’s okay I forgive’s you…… Say’s who!? SAY”’S Kblue!!!

  • Rumblefish says:

And you sir are an idiot.

  • Kblue2221984 says:

Investigation?????? Am I going to jail????? Am I in trouble???? I wish I knew as much about me as you do!!! It’s okay sweet heart, your not my only “closet fan”. I have thousands! Being famous is a joy, and a curse! being awesome on the other hand? Is delicious!!!! I would like to give a shout out to Sherry Lewis, she’s like a walking inspiration! I would also like to give a shout out to my old dispatchers :( Although Columbus County is cool I miss my Brunswick County Peeps!. To guesty? aka “dumb dumb” I sure hope you gain acceptance someday, until then? Stay lonely :) Say’s who!? Say’s Kblue!!!

  • Guestacular says:

If you’re going to keep repeating that stupid phrase at the end of every post, at least quit putting an apostrophe in “says.”

  • Guest005 says:

Two peas in a pod. Rex Gore and good best friend James Payne. I hope Rex Gore doesn’t expect to win his case. James Payne Specialty is saving murders from the dealth penalty so tax payers can flip the bill for them to stay in prison for the rest of their lives.

  • Guest2020 says:

Every American citizen has a Constitutional right to counsel. Even the dregs of society have this right. James Payne is an excellent attorney. Can he help it if he is good at what he does?

  • Guest2012 says:

I can understand being frustrated that someone “gets away” with a crime or spends the rest of their life in prison rather than being put to death. Rather than railing against the defense attorney perhaps the concerns should be with the course of the police investigation. If a defense attorney is able to find flaw in the investigation, then this creates reasonable doubt. Remember that our justice system is created to only find guilt when there is a preponderance of guilt and no reasonable doubt.

These murderers aren’t exactly walking free. They are spared the death penalty because often evidence is called into question due to inconsistencies or the lack of appropriate pursuit by law enforcement. With this in mind, the prosecution’s case will fail to meet the requirements for a sentence of death.

  • GuestUSMC says:

If Gore failed to appear, why is he not rounded up like a common criminal and put in jail? Anybody else would be.

  • SurfCityTom says:

was present. That’s why he is not rounded up.

All parties knew this was a prelimiary hearing and would not go to trial on this date.

  • Guest2020 says:

Given that the defense attorney and the prosecutor met with the judge to set a court date, it was probably not necessary for Mr. Gore to appear. If this was okayed by the judge then there would be no need to have him called and failed.

  • zenobia says:

If “getting off easy” means dying on the floor of the jail from being tasered to death?

  • Guest1026 says:

K-Blue. What Rex Gore did to Ronald Hewett? More like what Ronald Hewett did to himself. Rex just did his job to have the charges brought against him (Hewett). I am not saying I like either of these men but Rex Gore did nothing wrong in that case against Hewett. Ronald brought every bit of what happened to him; it’s called accepting responsibility for his actions. Ronald should be glad he got “off” so easily.

  • Law abiding citizen says:

I have known Mr. Rex Gore for over 30 years. He is a Honest Christian Man that served the citizens of our wonderful county with fairness and honesty for many years! People are too quick to judge and make negative comments on things they know little about. Folks say look what he did to Ronald Hewett? Excuse me but isn’t it the DA job to look into criminal matters brought to his attention? Had Mr Gore Not looked into the Ronald Hewett case he would have been obstructing justice and Not doing the job the fine citizens elected him to preform. If memory serves me correctly, Mr. Gore removed himself from Ronald Hewett’s case and allowed the Attorney General’s office to handle the matter. I think Ronald was treated unfairly but certainly not by Mr. Gore, that was done by his deputies whom he hired himself and that had known him all of his life. Assuming they knew Ronald better than most folks, maybe just maybe there was some wrong doing by the former sheriff…its time you all stop trying to make Mr. Gore your whipping boy and use your time to actually do some good for others much like Mr. Rex Gore has done all his life. I hope too that Ronald Gore can find some peace in his life and free himself from all the hatred he has for others and be thankful for his family, friends and supporters, much like Mr. Gore! Talk about a forgiving person, Mr. Gore does the right thing even when no one is watching.

  • Ani says:

    Dear Mr. Law Abiding Citizen:

You’re a blast a minute! This is such a crock you would not even tag your name to it! I bet ‘ole Honest Rex IS thankful for his family and supporter. They get a free ride in his Swill of Deceit, and share the profits thereof.

As for Mr. Gore doing the right thing even when no one is watching, Well, excuse me as I roll on the floor in laughter!! Might I say, “Obviously NOT!!” He and R.C. Soles should get together and do lunch.

You weenie. I wouldn’t have signed my name, either!….lol

  • the secret keeper. says:

rex gore is a bigger crook than you people know.

  • Guest20562 says:

Jon David is not any better he is doing the same crap as Rex Gore has done solving cases in the back room.
