WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Spring welcomes more than just wild azaleas throughout North Carolina. It also greets college students with diplomas and the beginning of a new season in their lives.
“It is a big step,” said graduate Nicholas Alfano. “I am ready to make the transition and start new.”
UNCW graduated over 2,000 students this weekend and handed out thousands of hard-earned degrees. But students said what they learned at UNCW was more than could be put on a piece of paper.
“UNCW has taught me a lot about how to humble myself and how to become more responsible,” said graduate Ashley Gaddy. “It gave me a diverse background from things that I might know back home.”
While some students seem so anxious to begin their careers…
“I have been in school for 6 years at this point,” said graduate Lacey Inman. “So it is time to do something else.”
Parents struggle with the idea of letting them go.
“I can’t believe four years has gone by so fast!” said Alfanso’s mother. “ It is very sad…and happy.”
Within only 5 months of commencement, 65% of the graduates had jobs while 27% decided to continue their education.
