WILMINGTON, NC (StarNewsOnline.com) — Parts of the former WASTEC facility will be torn down Tuesday in effort to protect New Hanover County personnel and property.
A study that was completed last summer found that the plate thickness of the stack at the county's former trash incinerator would not meet current wind-load criteria. That led officials to request that the facility's smokestack and enclosed flues, which served as vents for the stack's exhaust fumes, be torn down.
The complex is staffed around-the-clock for security purposes, and environmental director Joe Suleyman said if high wind speeds were to occur personnel could be in danger.
