WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A New Hanover County grand jury has indicted a former Hoggard High School coach and teacher on three criminal counts.

The grand jury returned an indictment yesterday against Michael Supak for indecent liberties with a student, assault on a female and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The indictment says Supak committed the alleged crimes against a 17-year-old female student. According to the indictment, the assault charge stems from Supak kissing the girl on the neck.

“We believe he’s innocent,” Supak’s attorney Brent Wentz said. “We intend to defend him in court.”

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office arrested Supak in November and charged him with indecent liberties with a student for an incident investigators said happened on campus in October.

New Hanover County Schools suspended Supak with pay following his arrest. Supak quit as a teacher and coach at Hoggard in March.

Records show his next court date is June 13.

The community relies highly on our school teachers to act professionally and lead as role models for our children. If guilty, this man violated our trust, and deserves the maximum penalty under law.

  • Guest Teacher says:

Just like Charles Barkley said, “I am not paid to be a role model” the same is true for teachers. If your child has to look up to me or any other teacher to be their “role model” then your doing a lousy job as a parent…

  • Guest22 says:

It’s an indictment, not a conviction. His day in court is still to come! Hold off on your celebration!!

  • Fed Up says:

Great news, he is a twisted excuse of a man and father. Looks like new charges were added, but all you evil Supak supporters crucified the victim. May God have mercy on you, but as for Supak, I hope he gets what he deserves.

  • Guest33 says:

Obviously the Hoggard community thinks he’s innocent. He played with Coach Braswell in the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame Golf Tournament a couple of weeks ago. The team was sponsored by the Hoggard Athletic Boosters club. Seems tasteless after what he has put the school thru.

  • Guestin says:

While this individual has not been convicted of the charges of which he has been accused, this inclusion is unwarranted. Having the Hoggard Athletic Booster Club sponsor an individual who has resigned his position in disgrace, and is accused of crimes against a student, is tasteless and wildly inappropriate. Any parent who is a part of this group needs to stand up to whomever made this decision, and demand answers. I don’t expect much accountability from the neanderthals who run athletics, but I do expect more from a parent run organization.

    Got brains?

  • Guesticle says:

and YOU’RE doing a lousy job as a teacher. You of all people should know the difference between ‘your’ & ‘you’re’!

  • Guest CommonTater says:

IF indeed you are a teacher YOU are paid to set an example through teaching. Charlie is in the adult world you are not. You are responsible for minors Sir Charles is NOT. Big difference here and that you have taken such an idiotic stance on this makes me hope you are looking for other employment because teaching isn’t something you grasp and I feel sorry for your students.

  • Guest2609 says:

You are absolutely correct. Parents today need to be more of a parent than a friend to their child. And parents should be the role model. Parents aren’t parenting anymore, they rely on others, especially the school system to discipline their child, so who else does the child have to look up to. Most have no idea who their child hangs out with, or what they spend their free time doing. I know if my child was spending time (after hours) with a teacher or a coach, it would be a red flag to me and make me start to ask questions. I don’t agree with what he did, but what is the difference whether it was at a school or if he was working at a major company or a store in the mall.

  • Guest-o-matic says:

The teachers point being that the basis for “example setting” comes from the parental influence in the home situation. Morals, character and honor are built at home by the parents to THEIR children. The teachers simply need to reinforce that, not build it. That is basic professionalism on the teachers behalf.

Too many, including yourself, seem to beleive that school is the training ground, the baby-sitting facility and daycare component for your children. That simply isn’t the case. Parents are the ones tasked with training their children to understand the difference between right and wrong! With the way teachers have been abandoned by parents in todays society in regards discipline and classroom behavior, I’m surprised we can get ANYONE to go into those classrooms and and put up with the atrocious and reprehensible behavior that parents believe to be acceptable!

You got Kids? Then YOU do YOUR job as a parent and teach them to be functional and productive members of society and don’t depend on others to do it for you. You give your children the guidance, the teachers will do THEIR best with what you give them!

I have no idea what you do for a living but I surely hope it doesn’t involve more that asking, “Paper or Plastic sir?”! You should never disrespect a teacher in such a manner with your lack of social knowledge with children!

  • Guest CommonTater says:

You don’t know me and you have no clue… about anything it seems… I have more social knowledge in my little finger than you and you are wrong. Deal with it.

there are other subjects one can teach

  • beachgirl says:

crazy a debate on spelling and grammer, on wway.has nothing to do with the story. before you get on me about my writing, my writing hand is in a cast so sorry i cant use both hands to type.

  • Teacher says:

So, we only require English teachers to have a basic command of the English language? Shouldn’t it be an expectation that every education professional know how to effectively communicate in writing? Teachers are college educated professionals: I don’t think this is an “English teacher” issue.

  • Bob Kinsley says:

Just to make something clear. Educators ARE to be role models. Check the NHC Schools Code of Conduct. It’s the first statement made! Policy #6082. For an “educator” not to know this is an indictment of the hiring process. We are the adults. It’s our calling to lead children whether a teacher or in another vocation. Many students lie for various reasons. We can’t demand perfect integrity from children for pete’s sake. They will make decisions that we will be shocked over. Believe me…if you have children of any age…you’ve been lied to. Just for curiousity, parents need to go check out your child’s facebook and twitter. Hopefully not, but you might be shocked. If you’re not shocked by some of the incredibly vulgar and hateful language used, that may spell out a much bigger problem for our society. Individuals, no matter how much guidance they receive, children will make mistakes. And many children have issues. Regardless of any “issues”, this victim is a child. The accused is an adult. This is not the only accusation I’ve heard about this person or other coaches in that school. What courage a child must have to come forward when so many will not. I’ve followed this since it happened. With the attacks this student received from her own peers/classmates, who could blame anyone else if they chose not to get involved. Wake the heck up folks!

  • Parent at Hoggard says:

As a professional in the field of education and educated parent of a student at Hoggard who happens to be friends with both the coach’s kids as well as the girl accusing the coach, I ask that you wait for the real story to come out. The girl accusing him has great difficulty with the truth, has a history of making up stories for attention. The issue is why have the teachers, who know that she is attention seeking with continued lies for 3 years, not made referrals to the guidance counselor and social worker to look into the underlying causes of this student’s behaviors? I am in the field of education and social work and can tell you that there is more to this story than the title of the article. I AM NOT blaming the victim, there are two victims. Based on my education and professional experience this is a screwed up chain of events that could have been circumvented if those teachers who worked with this student day after day had called into action a thorough evaluation of the girl and her family.

  • Alexis says:

You are in the education field…that explains so much. What an ignorant display. Do you have any evidence to support what you are saying about the victim…first hand knowledge? Or are you basing your display of ignorance on misguided students who think it’s cool for a teacher to act like Supak did? Even if what you say is truth, what he did is a crime. He is the sick one. Better question to ask is why didn’t the teachers and coaches report HIS behavior? It was al over Facebook and Twitter! Guess you never had a chance to see his account since he took them down and cleaned them up before reactivating. Grand Jury sure felt the evidence against him was compelling enough to add 2 more charges. I pray you’re not a teacher, I would hate for my child to be led by someone so misguided.

  • Guest28883 says:

If you are in the field of education then you should know that there is no possible way for anyone, other than the school staff, the student in question and her parents to know if such referrals were made. Why would you assume that the child’s (CHILD) needs were not met by the school?

  • GUEST 55 says:

The information sited in the comment above is INCORRECT. The John T Hoggard Athletic Booster Club in no way sponsored a golf team for the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame Golf Tournament.

  • Guest33 says:

That is good to hear. When I asked at the Golf tournament why Supak was playing with Coach Braswell the comment was made that the Boosters Club had sponsored the team. Sorry for reporting incorrect information. I am relieved that the Booster Club was not involved.
