WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Legion Stadium is this year’s winner of the James and Rosalie Carr Memorial Plaque given by the Historic Wilmington Foundation.

Local leaders and citizens who work and play in the stadium came out to enjoy the ceremony this morning.

The stadium was named in honor of American Legion Post 10, which gave the land and raised money for its construction 75 years ago.

“I think this adds another layer of celebration fro the stadium,” Wilmington Recreation and Downtown Services Superintendent Amy Beatty said. “The wonderful thing going for the stadium is that it’s truly a gathering place.”

The stadium was designed and built by the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression.
