WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Investigators in Columbus County have charged a man after they say he beat his dog in the head with a hammer.
Investigators say Ronnie Tyler, 53, beat his American Stafford Terrier with a hammer, May 5. Neighbors say they saw Tyler take the year-old pup into the woods and come back without her. A day later neighbors saw the dog walking out of the woods, and called animal control.
The Columbus County Sheriff's Office charged Tyler with felony animal cruelty. While Tyler posted bail and waits for his next court date; his dog is recovering at a foster home in Wilmington.
The dog is healing at the home of Columbus Humane Society member, Jennifer. Jennifer did not want to give her last name for safety reasons.
"He walked into the woods with a hammer in one hand and the dog's leash in the other, dragged the dog into the woods. When he came out three minutes later, he only had the hammer,” Jennifer said.
They say after treating her wounds with anti-bacterial spray, the dog’s head turned purple which earned her the nickname Violet.
“I said, ‘what was her name anyway?’ He said Karma,” Jennifer explained.
Although Violet’s karma has been troubled, her wounds are healing.
The Columbus Humane Society says Tyler has another dog, which the society is trying to get custody of. They believe that dog is a Rottweiler.
