WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Investigators in Columbus County have charged a man after they say he beat his dog in the head with a hammer.

Investigators say Ronnie Tyler, 53, beat his American Stafford Terrier with a hammer, May 5. Neighbors say they saw Tyler take the year-old pup into the woods and come back without her. A day later neighbors saw the dog walking out of the woods, and called animal control.

The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office charged Tyler with felony animal cruelty. While Tyler posted bail and waits for his next court date; his dog is recovering at a foster home in Wilmington.

The dog is healing at the home of Columbus Humane Society member, Jennifer. Jennifer did not want to give her last name for safety reasons.

“He walked into the woods with a hammer in one hand and the dog’s leash in the other, dragged the dog into the woods. When he came out three minutes later, he only had the hammer,” Jennifer said.

They say after treating her wounds with anti-bacterial spray, the dog’s head turned purple which earned her the nickname Violet.

“I said, ‘what was her name anyway?’ He said Karma,” Jennifer explained.

Although Violet’s karma has been troubled, her wounds are healing.

The Columbus Humane Society says Tyler has another dog, which the society is trying to get custody of. They believe that dog is a Rottweiler.

I was asking the same question about the neighbors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Guest Mara says:

What kind of people leave the dog in the woods, to suffer until she walks out of the woods the next day? I would have been on the phone with the police and/or animal control when I saw Ronnie Tyler drag the dog into the woods with a hammer in his hand!

  • Guest6858 says:

There is a special place in Hell reserved just for you.

  • i-love-my-furbabies says:

That is so sick and sad. How can someone do that to a innocent animal. Some people just make me sick how they treat animals their suppose to be man’s best friend not to be abused.

  • Carol J. Gorman says:

This article isn”t about you or your lack of religion. It is about a horribly injured dog. I don’t detect one ounce of
compassion in your voice for the dog. Just an ignorant play on words when you say “Thank God I am an atheist!”

  • Tere says:

You are so right. I am atonished they didn’t take the other helpless dog away also. And the neighbors that saw this should have gone to that dogs rescue after calling whom ever you have to call in NC. Shame on you neighbors for not going to that dogs rescue. I hope the guy gets beat with a hammer or worse someday.

  • guest123 says:

He deserves the same treatment he gave that poor dog. What could a dog possible do to deserve such terrible treatment? This man does not need to have animals of any kind. I hope the justice system give this piece of trash more that just a slap on the wrist.

  • Molly says:

Something I noticed that wasn’t mentioned is that the dog “Violet” walked out the next day. God bless this dog whose head held up to that brutal beating. Thank God for the design. This man must be made accountable. I hope at the time of my writing this that the other dog has been taken to safety. Why in the heck would anyone do this?

  • Deborah Novotny says:

This story is not about Religon, but about and innocent animal beaten in the head with a hammer…Are all atheist as cold hearted as you? I Love God and God Loves His Animals…We are suppose to Love and care for all creatures great and small. You Mr. or Mrs. are heartless, and will meet your maker in time!

    God Bless!!

  • guest32 says:

Beat him in the head with a hammer!! It’s only fair!!

  • GuestHelena Darsana says:

that man should have a hammer put through his head!!! i have no patience for these despicable humans!!! arrrgh

  • betsy says:

This man is definatly mentally ill….I would say someone should take a hammer and beat him in the head but that is not the Godly thing to say so I say pray for this man that he gets help because he is definately in need of it….probably goes back to the way he was raised…I love dogs…I believe God gave us dogs because why else would dog spelled backwards spells God….

  • Y.Jerngan says:

This story literally made me sick to my stomach and to know this jackass has another dog in his care is unbelievable and shows how lame and useless our laws are!!! If no one comes forward to adopt Violet…i will and give her the best home she deserves! Maybe this stupid man will rot in hell!!!

  • Genoveva M. Martinez says:

Please Columbus Humane Society take the other dog in your custody, he will harm this dog too just like he did with Violet. He should never be allow to own an other dog/animal EVER.
While in court all is fix with money, at least you as the Humane Society do what is right for animals, and show the law and criminals that better things can be done for animals.
This men should be put away for ever, he doesn’t deserve to be out in society or close to an animal.

  • pibbles says:

What the heck was wrong with the neighbors. DAH you see a man walk into the woods with a dog and a hammer. Man comes out with hammer but no dog. What MORON could not figure out that the dog was hurt or killed. WHY did the neighbors DO NOTHING! STUPID UNCARING NEIGHBORS! SHAME SHAME SHAME ON THEM. You only call AFTER the dogs comes out the next day and is gravely injured. Neighbors are just a guilty as the man!

  • Dianna Martin says:

What I can’t figure is why, if he was charged with felony animal cruelty, they didn’t go ahead and take the other dog? They left it there to, more than likely, have the same thing done to it. How absolutely stupid is that!

  • GuestBrooke says:

Good job neighbors! Had you called for help and put TWO and TWO together.. that pup would not have laid in the woods for hours scared and in horrible pain! People do the right thing! You are nosy enough to see something going on but not assertive and caring enough to call for help!!!!!! Are you kidding me?!!!!!!!

  • Guestoffo says:

You thanked god for the design, but believe god allowed this tragedy to happen? How far in the woods do you live my friend? People and your gods! lol

  • Claire Wheeler says:

If I saw a man walking into the woods with a hammer and this dog I would be right behind him with a weapon of choice. Luckily I wasn’t for I would be up on murder charges right now!

  • CCR says:

We need to ban all hammers….Oduma Administration..Where are you when we need you?

  • krishna says:

thank god I am an atheist!

  • GuestSharon says:

That man is a dirtbag!! That is a precious dog and she can still love even though she was so mistreated. Thank you to the woman that is taking care of her. God Bless you.

  • suzanne says:

I’ve said this many times before…it needs to be repeated..People this is the exact reason you all need to need to brush up on your candidates because that is how animal rights laws are passed and strengthened..this piece of trash needs to spend time in jail, reflecting on what hell is like since this poor dog is one of God’s creatures, he was not put on earth to be abused ..eye for an eye..people you want justice then stand up to your law makers and force them to punish the abusers..don’t just complain really do something…make them accountable for their actions….protest in court…exercise your freedom of the press…

  • guesty says:

Have you seen all the knives in your kitchen? I’m sure they are plotting evil deeds.

  • southernmomma says:

Maybe he needs to be hit with a hammer to see what it feels like!People like this need to be punished severely!I hope the poor dog does recover!

  • Calli's Mom says:

How about if we take Mr. Tyler and beat him in the head with a hammer? Seems like justice for me, right? I am tired of reading stories about animal abuse where the end result is simply the payment of a fine.

  • Guest6745 says:

I hope the guy gets prison time and is ordered to never be allowed to own another animal, even a goldfish.

  • Guestoday says:

Please keep this monster from owning any pets. How can anyone abuse children , elderly or animals?. Society has a duty to protect our most vulnerable against these tyrants! What happens to make these people so evil? I want to thank the children who witnessed and reported this crime. We adults should remember to do the same!

  • John A. Difloure says:

If a person abuses animals they’ll do the same to humans. His punishment should be a claw hammer to his head.

  • B M says:

Agreed, maybe him and the chihuahua guy can get together and make some music

  • GuestUSMC says:

What a total louse this Tyler guy is…..lowest of the low. Maybe with a little luck, his Rottie will provide the karma which he so richly deserves.
