Judge Hunter to seek NC Supreme Court seat in 2014

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- A Court of Appeals judge says he wants to move up to North Carolina's highest court.

Judge Bob Hunter of Morehead City announced over the weekend he's seeking the associate justice position on the state Supreme Court that will be vacated next year by Mark Martin. Martin said late last week he will run for chief justice.

Hunter was elected to the 15-member intermediate-level appeals court in 2008 and is serving an eight-year term. He's a former chairman of the State Board of Elections and deputy state attorney general. He got his law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Appellate court races are officially nonpartisan. Hunter is a registered Republican.

Another Court of Appeals judge named Bob Hunter is a registered Democrat from Marion.
