WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Highway Patrol says at least 13 people died on North Carolina highways during the Memorial Day weekend. That number includes three deaths in our area.

Investigators say the fatal accidents included one on I-140 north of Wilmington and two in Brunswick County.

The holiday weekend officially began at 6 p.m., Friday and ended at midnight, Monday. Last year the Highway Patrol investigated five fatal collisions and 360 injury related collisions during the holiday period.
