School mentor program shows off for NC AG

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Attorney General Roy Cooper paid a visit to a Wilmington school during his time in town today.

Cooper stopped by Forest Hills elementary to check out the DOGS program.

DOGS, or Dads of Great Students, is new to the school this year. It encourages father figures to volunteer during school hours with the kids.

The school says it has almost 100 men that help out. The students are thrilled to have the dads in the building.

"They will make a difference in these kids lives," Cooper said. "There will be some kids who make a different decision then then might have made because these adults were involved in their lives. I think that is what's really important."

The DOGS say the program has been extremely successful this year. They are looking forward to encouraging other schools to implement the program.
