WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Fred Lynch Invitational is just days away. Fred Lynch was the head basketball coach at Laney High School for 26 years compiling over 400 wins. Lynch no longer coaches, but he serves as the school’s athletic director. Nathan Faulk is now the Laney boys head basketball coach. In the summer of 2012 Faulk started the Fred Lynch Invitational to honor Lynch for all the service provided to Laney.

The 2nd Annual Fred Lynch Invitational will be held from June 17-19 at four different venues in New Hanover County: Laney High, Holley Shelter Middle, Trask Middle and Northside Baptist Church. The tournament featured 18 high school teams in 2012. 45 teams will be competing in 2013. We'll be posting the game schedule online as soon as it's released from Laney in the coming days. On Sunday June 9th on WWAY we'll have an extensive preview piece on WWAY on this year's event.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -– UNCW righthanded pitcher Justin Livengood (Winston-Salem, N.C./Ledford) became the program’s 88th player all-time, to be drafted or sign as a free agent on Friday, as the San Diego Padres selected him with the 298th overall pick (10th round ) in the of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft. "I want to thank the Padres organization for selecting me and I'd also like to thank my coaches and teammates at UNCW," said Livengood on Friday. "My time in the program has been a very special part of my life, one that I wouldn't give up for anything in the world. UNCW is a special place." Livengood, who joined the program as a walk-on in 2012, posted a record of 1-3 in a career-high 29 appearances while posting an earned run average of 2.94 and limiting opponents to a .219 batting average in 2013. In 33.2 innings, the hard-throwing reliever fanned 48 batters, averaging 12.83 strikeouts per nine innings.

As a junior, Livengood totaled just eight innings over nine relief appearances before corralling his talent and exploding onto the draft scene with his fastball and breaking ball as a senior.
The draft concludes on Saturday with rounds 11 through 40 being conducted.
Notes on the draft:

Livengood is the highest UNCW pick since Cody Stanley, a catcher, went in the fourth round to St. Louis in 2010 … 45 players have been drafted or signed as a free agent during Mark Scalf’s tenure with the program (23 seasons) … Brian Whitaker (2002, 25th round) is the only other Seahawk to be draft by San Diego while Daniel Cropper signed with the organization as a free agent in 2011 … The Colonial Athletic Association had four players drafted on Friday, including Hofstra pitcher Bryan Verbitsky (3rd round, San Diego) and Delaware standouts infielder Jimmy Yezzo (7th round, Washington) and pitcher Chad Kuhl (9th round, Pittsburgh).

Note: Livengood also played for the Wilmington Sharks in 2012.
